Jurors seated in Robert Durst murder trial

Feb. 27, 2020

A jury was chosen in Los Angeles on Thursday in the murder trial of millionaire Robert Durst, capping a weeklong selection process in a case expected to last into the summer and draw international media attention.

The eight-woman, four-man panel was sworn in at a courtroom in the Airport Courthouse near LAX as Durst, 76, looked on.
[.....]
Also on Thursday, attorneys began the process of seating another 12 people to serve as alternate jurors in the trial, which is expected to last up to five months and feature dozens of witnesses.

Judge Mark E. Windham told the panel to return Wednesday for the anticipated start of opening statements. One woman seemed stunned to make it onto the jury.

Does it seem a little extreme to have 12 alternates?? Seems excessive to me...

I think it's because of the estimated length of the trial Niner. Remember McStay and when the trial went over its anticipated length juror holidays and other things like sickness and jobs meant quite a few asked to leave. They don't like to rush things in California.

Yeah, it's a mistrial (IIRC) if they run out of jurors, as you can't make a decision with 11. (Ask me how I know, lol. This is how my first jury duty sesh nearly ended. A surprise 2-week-long trial, the night before verdict the judge had already dismissed the alternates; and one of our 12 had the bright idea to get drunk watching a baseball game. Didn't show up at the courthouse on verdict day. We all cooled our heels, while the judge/bailiff literally sent the police to wake him up and drag him in. :D)
