More than 31,000 Chinese students have made their way back to Australia after spending a fortnight in a third country, despite the government’s travel ban.

By travelling to a third country and spending two weeks in self-quarantine before coming to Australia, the students were able to satisfy the Department of Home Affairs’ travel restrictions. After two weeks in a third country those who have travelled from China are then able to travel to Australia.

Figures from Department of Home Affairs show 31,196 Chinese students have now arrived in Australia since mid-February. The students have been arriving at a rate of about 1000 a day, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The ban on non Australian citizens travelling from China was first announced on February 1 in a bid to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus, which started in Hubei province in China.

Good morning from Australia....

Australia's Minister for Home Affairs, Peter Dutton has tested positive for COVID-19. The minister confirmed he woke up this morning with a sore throat and elevated temperature and sought medical advice.

"I immediately contacted the Queensland Department of Health and was subsequently tested for COVID-19," Mr Dutton said in a statement this evening. "I was advised by Queensland Health this afternoon that the test had returned positive."

There were earlier concerns Mr Dutton was in close proximity to a number of Cabinet ministers both last week and this week and some of those ministers may need to go into self-isolation as a precaution.

"It's truly heartbreaking for everyone involved and another bitter blow on top of a rough 12 months of drought and bushfires," Mr Marshall said in a statement.

"Farmers have been doing it hard, whether it be dealing with the impacts of drought, bushfires, or in many cases both. "The show is a rare opportunity for farmers to come together, celebrate all that is great about agriculture and share what they do with the city."
