Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #37

If I am interpreting this correctly:

China - (as of 2/24) Apx 320k tests, Apx 83k positive cases
Italy- (as of 3/20) Apx 206,886 tests - Apx 80k positive cases
US- (as of 3/19)- Apx 103,945 - Apx 83k positive cases

I wonder how many test have been performed since 3/19 to see where the delta sits?
Note: positive cases are per todays numbers not the date of the number of tests conducted.

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Thursday that he planned to label different areas of the country as at a “high risk, medium risk or low risk” to the spread of the coronavirus, as part of new federal guidelines to help states decide whether to relax or enhance their quarantine and social distancing measures.

“Our expanded testing capabilities will quickly enable us to publish criteria, developed in close coordination with the nation’s public health officials and scientists, to help classify counties with respect to continued risks posed by the virus,” Mr. Trump said in a letter to the nation’s governors.

Three weeks from now is 4 days AFTER Easter.

Just sayin'

Epidemiologist: Coronavirus deaths in the US could peak in 3 weeks
A leading epidemiologist advising the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated the peak of deaths in the US coronavirus pandemic will be three weeks from now, after which “most of the damage will be done,” and says it may be possible to only isolate the vulnerable, allowing many back to work.

Ok, 4 days. Not too far off the mark. Here is the quote:

"...after which “most of the damage will be done,” and says it may be possible to only isolate the vulnerable, allowing many back to work."

So, 4 days after Easter, many may be allowed back to work....Sounds like what the administration is aspiring to?

Disrupting one’s usual routine for the benefit of others may not be to everyone’s liking, but throughout history, humans have been willing to make sacrifices to protect the health of others. The willingness to do so seems to be part of human nature. There is evidence from prehistory of human groups supporting elderly and disabled people who would have been unlikely to survive on their own.

Evolutionary theories suggest this may be due to the “grandmother effect”, which freed up younger members of the group while elders minded the children. Another theory suggests that compassion is beneficial because it enables people to feel superior to lower animals and aids group cohesion. Or it may be that people are kind to the elderly when they are young in the hope that they will receive the same care when they grow old.
Calling on human compassion by highlighting the danger to the higher-risk groups is an important messaging strategy as it recognises that the risk is different for different people. And it ensures that those who can self-isolate understand why they need to, without unduly worrying essential workers who need to move about to keep the country going.

This is a clever approach because, in purely biological terms, SARS-Cov2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 – is not that dangerous to most people. On a graph that plots how contagious a disease is against how deadly, it sits in the bottom left-hand corner – somewhere between 2009’s Swine Flu and the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu. It spreads far less easily than measles, for example. And is far less likely to kill those infected than smallpox or Ebola.
Coronavirus: why changing human behaviour is the best defence in tackling the virus

That is a great article, thank you for sharing, Imstilla.grandma.

It is fascinating from both a psychological and anthropological viewpoint how human behavior can make or break one's chances for survival, to be able to adapt to a particular set of behaviors.

Coming from a military family, being able to adapt to survive was one thing I have heard repeatedly from family members who have served in the military.

In other news, my employer sent out an email soon after 5 PM today - instead of working from home for the rest of March, the order has been extended to include the entire month of April. So in a way it's nice for me.

And having already worked from home before, mainly freelance writing (I know most of you already saw my poem on the previous thread) that has been easy for me to adapt to. :)

Well, some areas may be a low risk now, but just give it a little time.

March 28, the hospital ship USNS COMFORT (T-AH-20) leaves for New York City to the frontlines of the COVID-19 virus response. The USNS COMFORT will sail well ahead of its originally scheduled departure time to answer America’s call to battle against the global pandemic here at home.

At the President’s direction, the Administration announced last week that the USNS COMFORT would be activated and sail to the metropolitan New York area to ease the burden of area hospitals tasked with responding to the coronavirus.

Over 1200 medical personnel and critical supplies will be on board the vessel. They will bring to bear the skills, care, and compassion needed to wage this fight against an invisible enemy.

These doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, x-ray technicians, orderlies, and other medical staff will augment and support New York City’s medical community and conserve hospital capacity by treating some non-COVID-19 patients aboard the USNS COMFORT.

"Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers West announced Thursday that it located 39 million N95 masks and will make them available to state and local governments and health care systems that are fighting the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The union found a distributor with the masks, which are cleared for surgical use, after pleas from health care workers as new coronavirus cases surge across the state and the country as a whole.

Union officials said they also found a supplier that can produce some 20 million protective masks per week and another that can supply millions of protective face shields."

Hope for the best, plan for the worst. We need to keep our minds open, be flexible and smart, and do our very best to help each other. :)

The U.S.A. now has the most COVID-19 positive cases. Our death rates seem lower than other countries but our recovery rate also seems lower. I posted a link below to the website where I got the numbers for positive cases, deaths, and recoveries.

U.S.A. - Death Rate 1.4% Recovery Rate 2.2%
Italy - Death Rate 10.1% Recovery Rate 12.8%
Spain - Death Rate 7.5% Recovery Rate 12.1%
Germany - Death Rate 0.6% Recovery Rate 12.9%
Iran - Death Rate 7.5% Recovery Rate 35.5%

Any idea when it will reach New York?

Trump cites report Cuomo passed on chance to buy 16,000 ventilators in 2015
From link:

The task force discovered that were 7,250 ventilators in New York hospitals and about 1,900 in nursing homes – with most of them already in use. Even with the state’s own stockpile, that task force said there was only 2,800 total ventilators available, despite health officials’ warnings that a major outbreak could require 18,600 New Yorkers to be on the machines each week during the crisis’ peak.
