Holland America cruise ship with dead aboard gets OK to head toward Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Several Broward County commissioners were alarmed at the idea of the Zaandam docking at Port Everglades.

Commissioner Michael Udine said early Sunday that Port Everglades notified county commissioners late Saturday with its mandates for the passengers including: All illnesses and conditions must be accurately disclosed and documented; the cruise line, at its expense, will provide all protective equipment to all responders; temperature readings are required for all disembarking crew and passengers; and the cruise line, at its expense, will arrange for private ambulance transportation, among other issues.

To minimize exposure, passengers are only allowed off the ship with one piece of luggage with essential items. The cruise line would sanitize all other luggage, according to Port Everglades regulations.

And, “no less than 24 hours in advance of the start of debarkation, the cruise line will present a security plan for review and approval... how passengers will debark orderly, safely and in compliance with current health advisories (i.e. social distancing). Failure to maintain good order may result in an immediate suspension of the debarkation until the situation is under control,” according to the guidelines.

Udine said the ship’s pending arrival would be discussed at Tuesday’s scheduled county commission meeting; the ship needs 72 hours to get to Port Everglades once it passes the Panama Canal.

What the heck??? I am glad I dont live anywhere near Fort Lauderdale--
If I did I would be beside myself with anger

So I apologize if this has been discussed before, but what is a humane solution? They have to dock somewhere, and the dead need to be removed. Genuinely asking because I don't know.

So maybe it was a good thing that the Feds sent all of those medical supplies to China, back in February?
We have 1000 of hospitals and first responders across the US that have PPE issues. I have personally bought supplies to donate to 2 hospitals and have purchased supplies for my husband Paramedic to be safe.
News of Healthcare workers and First responders testing positive are prevalent.
This is a major failure for the US.....shamefully

The ship should go where it is registered. That would be the best plan. If the country refuses port, the next solution is to go to the country where the ship owners are based out of.

Or, just go to the United States, because no other country is humane enough to deal with the situation.

Hi again @Squinchy! Didn’t Humboldt only have 2 cases when we talked a couple of weeks ago?! I have been bad about keeping track, but that’s a big increase to 18 cases! I don’t suppose they tell you where the cases are. My county in Oregon (Jackson) has risen from 2 to 13 pretty fast, but not as fast as you.

I’m glad you you’re stocked up now. No need to add crow to your provisions. :D
Yes, it jumped fast. They aren't saying where in the county but a few came in on a flight.

CHINA

But the history of pandemics — in particular the multiple outbreaks of Spanish flu in 1918 and 1919 — suggests it may be early for triumph, and specialists in infectious diseases have warned that China is rushing to revive its economy even though most of the country has had little exposure to the virus, and therefore remains susceptible to COVID-19.

“Because most of China hasn’t really had a significant number of infections in the first wave … there’s still enormous vulnerability of the population to being infected and to having a large epidemic
,” said Benjamin Cowling, an epidemiologist at Hong Kong University. “A second wave is inevitable, sooner or later,” he said. “Totally inevitable. There’s no question.” He warned about the possibility of a “silent spread” by people with mild or no symptoms that go undetected for months, until enough cases emerge that the virus once again becomes difficult to contain. Chinese authorities have continued to call for vigilance.

okay- so now i am freaking out: i go to Walgreens to get a few things-- and this guy comes kind of close to me (in front of me) and tells me I am beautiful --- normally that would be a nice thing to hear ( though i am by no means beautiful)-- anyway, now i am freaking out because he got way too close -close enough to breathe on me---- Oy Vay!!! I don't think it is a huge risk but it is a risk to have someone too close to you with their breath-- I am a person at high risk- elderly with asthma----

Well, I'm gonna guess you are beautiful, but I'm also gonna guess he is a creep. Way inappropriate at this time. I would take a shower, and then not worry too much. Or, call your doc.

Some U.S. governors have stepped up during coronavirus crisis, others not so much

“More than any other governor, Cuomo has channeled the nation’s yearning for sober, decisive and competent leadership during this time of crisis,” Hilderbrand said. “And his blend of cajoling and flattery in dealing with President Trump is a model for the times. Watching his candid yet reassuring briefings, one is struck with feeling that Cuomo has finally found his moment to shine.”

Alvin Tillery Jr., a respected political science professor at Northwestern University, said Cuomo and several other governors, including Inslee, have performed exceptionally well during this crisis.

“He gets an A+ for raising the national alarm about community spread (in places like nursing homes),” Tillery said of the Washington governor. “He has also been a leader in pushing the federal government to assist the states. He has also used the authority of his office to use creative ways to get triage hospitals built in the state."

Also deserving of top grades, in Tillery’s estimation, are Democratic governors Gavin Newsom of California, J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Republicans Larry Hogan of Maryland and Mike DeWine of Ohio.

“[DeWine] gets an A+ for decisive action to delay the state’s primary,” Tillery said of DeWine. “He has also done an excellent job communicating with his constituents about the potential need to have a long period of social distancing in Ohio.”

DeWine was also among the first governors to require health screenings to people before they visit places like nursing homes and prisons, added Hildebrand.

Rent is due, and coronavirus means many Coloradans don't have the money

“Dozens of letters from landlords to tenants shared either with The Denver Post directly or via the new Facebook group Colorado Rent Strike and Eviction Defenseshow that landlords are taking a wide range of approaches. Some have promised to freeze rent levels for a few months. Many are offering payment plans and saying they’ll work with tenants facing hardship.

Others are continuing to charge late fees, and threatening consequences.

“We WILL exercise to evict you for non-payment ASAP!!!” reads one letter shared with The Post.

“My landlord sent out a mass email saying they are expecting rent on the first, that they’ll still be processing evictions,” Broker said. “It almost feels like my landlord doesn’t care about my life, that they would rather see me die than give me a month of free rent.”

Landlords, for whom few aid sources seem available right now, in many cases say they can’t afford a rent freeze — something advocates have called on Polis to support, but that he’s not backing.

“If people don’t pay their rent, who pays the housing provider’s employees, or the provider’s vendors, cleaning crews?” Lyng said. “Who pays the landlord’s debt obligations, mortgage payments? We’re all just part of this ecosystem. We’re all asking people to work together.””

My landlord offered a whole whopping 5% discount! Thinking I’ll treat myself to a good take out dinner to celebrate....

Thank You for doing that and keeping your husband safe as well. Thank him for continuing to care for people at his risk. It's incredibly surreal to have insight to what is really happening. Yet I'm grateful as it keeps me/us safe.
