Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #43

It's insane to me what some governments are declaring as essential. In NY the liquor stores are considered essential. I guess that's easy for me to say, since I don't drink. And, as all my family and friends point out to me every moment, I'm doing everything to avoid Coronavirus but am still smoking cigarettes, so it's hypocritical of me as well as cognitively dissonant.
But liquor stores? My governor is not saying that places that sell cigarettes must remain open for smokers. And liquor is worse, especially in these times, because while smoking certainly harms me, it does not impair my judgement or cause me to get into a car accident.
The last thing we need around here are people who are isolated, depressed and so on buying liquor and going on a joyride. I'm trying to get groceries online to avoid the supermarket. Surely people don't have to go and crowd into a store to get alcohol. Particularly when schools are closed, restaurants are closed, Broadway is closed, the movies are closed, travel is basically closed, playgrounds are closed, sports are shut down, and everything else that I'm forgetting is shut down. Why liquor? JMO.

NJ/NY residents are not out joyriding or riding the subway for fun. They are stepping up patrols and stopping people who need to show proof that they are out for essential reasons. When self-quarantine comes to your area you will see signs outside every open business establishment that states the maximum amount of customers allowed inside at one time (usually 5 or 10 customers, more for larger stores, such as grocery or hardware, but no more than 50). When the store reaches capacity, we stand in line outside the building 6 feet apart.

I think it’s useful to remember Comfort is a battle hospital. It’s used to treating physical injuries and in particular, injuries sustained by soldiers. It’s not set up to treat illness.

It would be easier to use in a terrorist attack or bombing where you have injuries rather than illness. I think everyone just wanted to do something without thinking how ambulances would get to the ship and how patients with communicable illness would be treated (or not). Each patient you move from a hospital to the ship requires another ambulance ride at a time when EMS is already stretched thin.

All states seem to be doing this. It’s soma. IMO they hope people just get drunk at home and go to sleep early.

States will say it’s to prevent alcoholics going into withdrawal and ending up at hospitals. I think drinking is just such a normal routine for people they consider it like grocery stores - give people something to do at home to destress.

At the end of the day the states have to pick their battles and letting people drink seems to be one they don’t want to fight.

© Shutterstock Representational Image An anti-parasitic drug available throughout the world has been found to kill COVID-19 in the lab within 48 hours.

A Monash University-led study has shown a single dose of the drug Ivermectin could stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture.

"We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA (effectively removed all genetic material of the virus) by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it," Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute's Dr Kylie Wagstaff said on Friday.

While it's not known how Ivermectin works on the virus, the drug likely stops the virus dampening the host cells' ability to clear it.

The next step is for scientists to determine the correct human dosage, to make sure the level used in vitro is safe for humans.
"In times when we're having a global pandemic and there isn't an approved treatment, if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner," Dr Wagstaff said.

"Realistically it's going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available."

Before Ivermectin can be used to combat coronavirus, funding is needed to get it to pre-clinical testing and clinical trials.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug also shown to be effective in vitro against viruses including HIV, dengue and influenza.
The study is the joint work of Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity.

The study findings have been published in Antiviral Research.
I’m still catching up. Now I’m picturing people eating doggie heartworm meds until they puke, land in the hospital, and actually contract the coronavirus there.

Edited to make it generic HW

I just want to add-my last trip out to get food, also involved finding some herb plants. Theym, aloe and rosemary are excellent herbs to have on hand. As long as they are growing, they can supply additional benefits to the home medicine cabinet, as well as cooking.
MOO IMO IME

Terrific! I found "bonus" oregano in my garden yesterday! I swear I didn't plant it! Squirrel must have brought it to me, along with the "bonus" hyacinths from a couple of years back :) I love just looking at the soil every day, and seeing something new.

Some people are advised to have a drink or two.
In my state of the liquor stores close, the moonshine will be more readily available.
On another note, just found out two elderly people up the road are both sick. In 19 days the husband has only been at a drive in restaurant for an evening to go meal. The woman never left home, nor have they had anyone in. Fortunately they favor one restaurant with a fat dude logo, so we all know....., I doubt the restaurant will self announce, IF they have positive cases. Moo

We had a short walk today. Everyone respecting distance. When home we grabbed 2 lawn chairs and called MIL that we would be there in 5 min. We met her at the back. She stayed up on her deck and we were in our lawn chairs on the lawn probably 30 ft. away. It was a nice visit. We folded up our chairs and put them in her detached garage for next time. It can be done. Safely.

Imo, something must be done about people that blatantly disregard directives. Otherwise, defiance will only worsen.
imo, it’s kinda like shoplifting, get away with it once,
try again tomorrow. I live on a main state road, it is as busy as any normal Friday evening. I have no idea where all the cars are headed, wmt, Lowe’s, mcD? It is literally bumper to bumper. Why?
Until law enforcement does something and until heavy fines or jail time is enforced, this will continue. There is no punishment.

Why You Should Flush With The Lid Down: Experts Warn Of Fecal-Oral Transmission Of COVID-19

Yep, the last thing we want to think about, but flushing mechanisms in your toilet can aerosolize the virus in your feces.
I mentioned yesterday, most large public restrooms use lidless, self flushers, they sound like a 747 winding up for take off. I’m sure they spray poop all over the room, especially if multiple flushes occur simultaneously. Moo. Thankfully the casinos, malls & other places with 40 stall restrooms are now closed. Moo

New York's total number of deaths will be around 16,000 by August 1. This is due in large part to lack of PPE, appropriate medicines including Z-pacs, and lack of intensive care beds. They will need 10,000 ventilators and approximately that number of ICU beds to lower that number. They are no where close to receiving that (the Navy ship is for the NON-CV19 people who are dying/very ill with other things, like cancer or MS or are in diabetic comas because they can't get their meds/nutrition - but don't have CV).

(You'll have to select New York - if you open two windows you can look at Cali and New York side by side).

Yes, I do use the word Cali, as does most of my family, we are California natives.

If New York will be around 16,000 deaths, where do you predict the other 84,000-224,000 other deaths will be?

Might have to travel with our own small potty! I did when my children were young.

So why do our public toilets not have lids?
I read a long time ago, lidless promoted people to flush. I did not realize so many would not flush. Also, easier to clean, imo? I guess we don’t have to worry about using a public restrooms in the near future. The last time I was in a gas station they had theirs closed. No employee wants tasked with cleaning a bathroom. Moo. Plus, we are not supposed to travel, so I guess go at home. Does anyone really want to use a public restroom right now? Not I.

The IHME publishes the modeling that forecasts death by states and models the peak date of the pandemic in each state. Click on the center of the green line to look at your state. The model assumes compliance to the social distancing, etc, too bad many aren't following it. This is the model that Dr. Birx was referring to when they were discussing the 100k to 240k deaths projected in the USA. IHME | COVID-19 Projections

Such sobering news. Lethality rate is higher than originally thought (to my way of thinking, a lot higher):

Current COVID-19 situation updated (all data & graphs)

In the US about 1% of diagnosed 40-49 year olds died. Keep in mind that only sicker people are getting tests - that's really important in interpreting it. But, until a couple of days ago, it was zero people in that group - and we haven't reached peak.

In my age group, it's 6% (initially reported as 1%, then 2% now not quite 6%). That's 60-69 year olds.

For 70-79 it's 17% (keep in mind that this is of TESTED cases - people with symptoms severe enough to warrant hospital admission - almost no where is testing people with mild or even moderate symptoms)

80+. it's about 25% (of Tested cases).

Sobering. And with everyone in the US going exponential (starting today, more or less), this needs more radical measures - by which I mean a huge research focus on drugs that really work to mitigate.

Also, sadly, more public education about what the symptoms are and when to go to hospital - people still think this is "the flu."

It is a virus that can suddenly attack your lungs (putting it very simply).

S
udden Attack Respiratory Virus (yes I know the medical word is acute, but not everyone uses that word every day - so for those of you still trying to explain to others, emphasize how it can get SUDDEN really fast).

I wish we could insist on testing. I wish we had enough tests.

Louisiana nursing homes with coronavirus clusters won't be ID'd anymore, officials say

On Friday, state officials said that 261 residents in 61 separate nursing facilities have tested positive for the highly contagious respiratory infection. Sixty have perished from complications related to the disease.
<snip>

Until Wednesday, the state had been naming the individual facilities where clusters have been identified. The state defines a cluster as two or more related cases.

But Thursday, amid a massive jump in total positive cases among all groups, officials said they would not issue an update, and that they had been working with the Centers for Disease Control on the best way to report on senior care facility infections. By Friday, health officials said the volume of homes made it too difficult to report the names of individual facilities.
