CANADA CANADA - Kenora, Ontario, WhtFem, 35-55, Glasses, Found in Tent, 17 Jun 2009

For some reason I feel she is from outside Canada. Given that her jeans look like they are from a store in Lafayette Louisiana, USA is a possibility. I looked up the book and its a British book so that's another route I took,. Elena had tried to leave the country and was depressed, but Sandra bears a resemblance, and wears similar glasses and also wears hoop earrings, not to mention being from Louisiana... thoughts?

Her jeans were from Zellers, a (now-defunct) department store chain. It was a Canadian chain.
Kenora is not just somewhere you just set out to go to. It is fairly far north, lots of unincorporated area, lots and lots and lots of trees. It's kind of a stop on your way to somewhere else. I think they have like 15,000 people. Small town Northwest Ontario. It's kind of the "Finally, we are in Ontario" town when you are travelling through the Prairies, and also the "Can you hold it a little while longer?, it's only like 90 minutes to Dryden." spot en route.

I wonder if they have ruled out Nancy Dorreen Morton:

Missing from Bradford, Ontario since May 1, 2007
She is 5'7" and 39 years old.
3723DFON - Nancy Dorreen Morton

Nancy doesn't have any identifiers on file according to Doe Network so I don't know how she could be compared to any Does... but if anyone following here wants to suggest her as a possible match, please go ahead.

That is a very close resemblance.

Yeah sorry I worked that out by looking up CA numbers from the tags... after id posted it. The branding of the store is too similar to be a coincidence though.. maybe an offshoot. The woman still bears a resemblance, although now not enough to warrant submitting it. On to the next one.....

Kenora "Millie" Jane Doe 2009 - DNA Doe Project Cases

''Kenora “Millie” Jane Doe 2009
On June 17, 2009 a hiker walking near the Trans-Canada Highway discovered the body of a White/Caucasian woman in a small, one-person tent located in a wooded area near Miller Rapids Road, Kenora, Ontario, Canada. The woman, believed to be Canadian, was dressed in hiking-type clothing, and equipment for rugged hiking and camping was found near the body. A forensic evaluation revealed the woman was 35 to 55-years-old, 5’ 4, 110 pounds, and had shoulder-length, light brown hair. Cause of death was determined to be accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from a hibachi stove found in the tent. During the autopsy it was discovered the deceased had undergone major reconstruction surgery of her jaw and face, which was most likely conducted in a major surgical hospital 20-30 years prior to her death. Investigators believe she had died in the tent one day to a week prior to being discovered.

NamUs ID: None
Date Body Found: June 17, 2009
Race: Uncertain
Gender: Female
Estimated Age: 35 to 55
Estimated PMI: 1-7 Days
Location: Kenora, ON''

I have a question. Why couldn't they get a more accurate PMI? Kenora in mid-June is generally about 15-20C during the day, dropping to about 10C at night. Why a week long possible differential?

I have submitted this woman before because she looks very similar to the sketch, especially her nose/mouth area. However, I never recieved a reply back because the canadian police are terrible at actually recieving tips, and back then most agencies would just say "we will look into it."

Submit it again so that maybe it puts a fire under their butts. I dont have acess to my old email account, but ill try to regain entry and see when I sent it.

This would be one heck of a long-shot match, but what about Theresa Anne Pettit? She went missing with her husband, Ron Yakimchuk, in 1973 on their way from Alberta to the Maritimes via Ontario.

This suggestion requires a possibility that she could live anonymously for 35+ years, but there are a similarities that merit the cognitive leap. These include mention of (via Doe Network):
  • her "free spirit"
  • the suggestion that her and Ron were outdoorsy/camper-types
  • her penchant for smoking hand-rolled cigarettes
  • her use of glasses, and
  • a documented history of "extensive dental work" that required she wear "braces for a few years"
The last bullet gave me pause, because it seems to suggest this dental work may have been done during adulthood. The Globe and Mail article says her work was outdated and investigators "calculated she was in her early 20s when she had the operation." Theresa was 24 when she went missing, and rings in at the same height as Millie (5'4").

Just thought I'd throw her name into the mix... as stranger things have happened with these matches.

I wonder why she is getting so few matches in the DDP spreadsheet. None over 30cM and very few in total. Are Canadians not big to uptake DNA testing, or is she from an ethnic group that is less well represented in the databases (her admixture doesn't seem to indicate that to me). Thoughts?

@Melt71 , im wondering if you could send me the link to the DDP spreadsheet? I always see people talking about it but I haven't been able to actually find it!
And agreed, her ethnic background is not uncommon. I guess there are just less Canadians in general, and fewer Canadians who have used a DNA service. I did 23andme a while ago, and checking my DNA relatives (of which I have 1400), and it says 405 have ancestors born in the US, vs. only only 26 born in Canada... of course not everyone adds in where their ancestors are from, but US citizens are much more represented on that site.

There is another Canadian on the spreadsheet: Nation River Lady, Ontario and she has a very high number of matches (over 4000 matches in total and 16 matches over 40 cM), here is the link:

Lots of Canadians have ancestors from similar places as Americans do, though, so not sure if it's an issue of that. I wonder if there may be recent immigration, or perhaps the DNA sample was poor?

Grant County John Doe, Vernon County Jane Doe, Peter Kalama Lane Jane Doe and St. Tammany Parish John Doe also have a very low number of matches (or a low top match), all despite being of European heritage. Maybe we'll have a better idea when the O4 admixture is posted.

It would be really interesting to see someone do an artist's impression of the deceased before she had the surgery. if she had a protruding chin and her jaws were aligned to correct her bite, someone may remember a girl like that in school. I dont see her at the high end of the age range. There are many before and after pics online to show the dramatic change in a person's appearance. Maybe the police forensic artist could work with a specialist to ascertain how the jaws and chin were angled for fusion to get an idea of here previous facial structure.
