A police officer allegedly found a human torso in a suitcase being carried by a couple on the English-Welsh border.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after the discovery on Tuesday night and a large area on the outskirts of Coleford in Gloucestershire remains cordoned off.

It is understood other body parts have been found in the surrounding area in the Forest of Dean.

The couple were allegedly walking along a road when a passing police officer became suspicious of them and stopped to ask what was in the case.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said on Wednesday: "Due to an ongoing police investigation road closures and scene guards are in place on the A4136 between Monmouth and Coleford.

"Shortly after 11.30pm on Tuesday 12 May, officers discovered suspected human remains.

"Enquiries continue to establish what has taken place and further forensic tests are being carried out on the remains.

"A woman from Birmingham aged in her 20s and a man from Wolverhampton aged in his 30s have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the investigation and remain in police custody."

There was a large police presence in the area yesterday with roads to the scene all closed and a police helicopter hovering overhead.

Gloucestershire Police have not yet issued any update on the inquiry today.

The police search is centred around the Stowfield Quarry and the surrounding area.

One resident told GloucestershireLive on Tuesday: "The tents weren't there when I went out this morning but they had appeared by the time I got back. I don't know what's going on but they say I can't even walk along the road.

Murder inquiry after human remains found in bags in Forest of Dean

A murder inquiry has been launched after police found the remains of a woman hidden in two suitcases near the English-Welsh border.

The investigation began after a member of the public reported suspicions to the police about a vehicle being driven erratically in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire.

Police found the vehicle in the dark, spoke to two people, and then found the two suitcases. Officers are not certain but believe there is one victim, a woman.

They have been given until Friday night to question two people – a woman in her 20s from Birmingham and a man in his 30s from Wolverhampton.

Gloucestershire police said in a statement: “Shortly after 10.30pm on Tuesday 12 May a member of the public reported suspicions to police about a vehicle due to its manner of driving.

“It had been travelling on the A4136 near Coleford and officers in the local area were advised. The vehicle was located by police a short while later and two people were spoken to.

“Two suitcases were found to contain human remains and two people were subsequently arrested. They remain in police custody. A vehicle was also seized. Investigating officers believe there is one victim, a woman, and forensic examinations are ongoing to confirm her identity.”

Police try to identify the "torso in a suitcase" as a detective who is given 36 extra hours to interrogate suspects - News Archyves Uk
''The macabre discovery was made in Gloucestershire late Tuesday evening and investigators believe there is a female victim.

A couple – a twenty year old woman from Birmingham and a thirty year old from Wolverhampton – were arrested after being found on the English-Welsh border with two suitcases containing the trunk and human remains. They were taken into custody that evening and both are still under discussion. A vehicle was also confiscated.

According to the Gloucestershire police, a member of the public reported suspicions to the police about how to drive a vehicle on the A4136 near Coleford. Local agents located the vehicle and spoke to the two people before finding the remains.

A huge police cordon, inside which officers continue to search today, saw a fishing and former sawmill, which now contains storage units, several houses and a campsite, all closed, as well as the entrance to the Stowfield Quarry, which is located around a mile and a half long.

A roadblock is taking place along the A4136 between Monmouth and Coleford while forensic tests are ongoing to identify the victim, along with a post mortem examination.''
