Driver was huffing before crash that killed 3 Girl Scouts, mother
LAKE HALLIE, Wis. -- A young driver was inhaling chemical vapors, or huffing, just prior to striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a mother and critically injuring a fourth girl who had been picking up trash along a rural Wisconsin highway, police said Monday. Colten Treu, 21, sped off after the collision in Lake Hallie Saturday morning, but later surrendered.

Lake Hallie police said Monday that the deceased were: 9-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, and 10-year-old Haylee Hickle and her 32-year-old mother, Sara Jo Schneider, from the Town of Lafayette.
Not surprising that the driver was intoxicated. Usually those drivers are more concerned with being caught doing something illegal than they are about the victims.

I hope that punk huffer gets a significant prison sentence, not just a slap on the wrist. I also think it was very poor judgement to have a group of 4th graders pick up trash along the side of a highway, especially a highway that didn't even have guardrails.

Chippewa Falls Girl Scouts: Suspect fought for the wheel before deadly wreck, state says - CNN

"The fatal incident was similar to one in September, when Treu crashed his car and police found methamphetamine and THC in it, Newell said in court.

After Saturday's fatal wreck, Treu went home and had someone else park the vehicle in the garage, the complaint says.

He took another car out to a party with friends, Newell said.

Treu was found guilty of "operating with a prohibited blood alcohol concentration" in November 2014 in Chippewa County, the complaint says. On October 2 this year, he was released on bond on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine."

How many chances does one person get??

Court case delayed for man charged in Girl Scouts' deaths

Jan 30, 2019

"CHIPPEWA FALLS — The criminal court case of a man accused of huffing from an aerosol cannister, then driving his pickup truck into a group of five people, killing four, on Nov. 3 will be delayed for more than two months while attorneys wait for toxicology results.

Colten R. Treu, 21, 1060 Joseph St., is charged in Chippewa County Court with four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit and run-involving death, and one count each of hit and run-causing great bodily harm, intentionally abusing hazardous materials and bail jumping. Treu reportedly struck a group of Girl Scouts and one of their mothers.

Treu appeared via video Wednesday from the Chippewa County Jail, joined by his two attorneys. His attorneys requested the delay....

Chippewa County district attorney Wade Newell said it is likely 60 days before the toxicology reports come back from the state lab. Isaacson set the return date for the afternoon of April 12, allowing for up to three hours of discussion that day. No trial dates have been set.

Treu remains in jail on a $250,000 cash bond. He did not speak during the short hearing. He previously waived all time limits on future proceedings in his case...."

Colten Treu will make his first appearance in Chippewa County Court on Friday. Here's what to expect

April 11, 2019

"...Colten R. Treu, 22, is charged in Chippewa County Court with four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit and run-involving death, and one count each of hit and run-causing great bodily harm, intentionally abusing hazardous materials and bail jumping....

Treu will be present for a preliminary hearing, which serves as a mini-trial, where evidence of a crime is presented to the judge, and the judge determines if there is enough evidence to move the case toward a trial. Because numerous spectators are expected, the hearing has been moved to the largest courtroom in the Chippewa County courthouse....

Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell filed a statement with the court Monday saying he intends to present police and medical reports as exhibits during the hearing Friday.

The likely outcome of Friday’s hearing is that Isaacson sets a future court date for an arraignment – where Treu would enter a plea – and possibly setting trial dates.

The four people killed in the crash were Jayna S. Kelley, 9, Autum A. Helgeson, 10, both of Lake Hallie, Haylee J. Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, both of the town of Lafayette...."

Jury to hear evidence in Girl Scout traffic deaths

Sept 11, 2019

"When Colten R. Treu’s trial in the hit-and-run deaths of four people begins in January, the jury will be allowed to hear some details about a crash involving Treu that occurred Sept. 30 in Rusk County.

During a motion hearing Wednesday in Chippewa County Court, Judge James Isaacson ruled that the jury can hear how the crash occurred but said that any information about his drug use or intoxication at the time will be redacted and not shared with the jury.

Treu, 22, 1060 Joseph St., is charged with four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit and run-involving death, and one count each of hit and run-causing great bodily harm, intentionally abusing hazardous materials and bail jumping. Treu is accused of huffing from an aerosol canister on Nov. 3, 2018, then crashing his pickup truck into members of Girl Scout Troop 3055 as they were picking up trash on Highway P in Lake Hallie, south of the Highway 29 overpass....

The homicide trial is slated to begin Jan. 21 and could last two weeks. One more motion hearing is slated for Oct. 30. Isaacson ordered the defense to have all of its motions filed by Sept. 25 so the prosecution has time to examine them....

Treu remains incarcerated on a $250,000 cash bond.
The four people killed in the crash were Jayna S. Kelley, 9, Autum A. Helgeson, 10, both of Lake Hallie, Haylee J. Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, both of the town of Lafayette.

The fifth person injured was Madalyn Zwiefelhofer; she was hospitalized for three weeks....

Treu has one drunken-driving conviction from 2014, plus the Sept. 30 incident in Rusk County. He has a status hearing on that case slated for Jan. 27."
