The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Hey everyone,

Politicizing is not allowed. We realize it's difficult to separate Covid from politics in this discussion, but ...

If you are going to post about 1 or 1 million people attending a rally, a church event, etc, put on by God knows who, make sure your post indicates how the content of that post relates to Covid19 and isn't just about politics or political figures.

From Tricia's post at the beginning of each of these threads:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT.

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

This post lands at random.

The Covid19 forum was set up by Tricia for those who take this virus seriously and are concerned about its effects on them and their loved ones. If you aren't concerned about Covid then please don't post here with a view to downplaying or minimizing the threat and making others feel that their concerns are not warranted.

If Covid does not concern you, this thread is not for you.

IMPORTANT:

We are receiving far too many complaints about posts that are minimizing the severity of Covid19 and its impact on human lives.

Websleuths has chosen to place their trust in Dr. Fauci, the CDC, the scientific data and those with extensive pandemic knowledge and expertise. If you aren't prepared to accept their recommendations and advice, or if you have a cavalier attitude about the health consequences of this deadly virus on yourself or others, then please don't post in this forum.

There are other "anything goes" forums on the internet that may be more to your liking as they do not have the same posting guidelines.

Please continue to Report any posts that you feel are contrary to the forum specific policies Tricia has put in place, or posts that you feel are not in the spirit of this discussion.

Thank you.

ALL images require a link to the source or the post will be removed. (It must be an actual clickable link for other members to access directly, not just saying where it came from or having the source show on the page.)

Random links or random videos are not allowed and will be removed. If you aren't sure, please check with a Mod or Admin by sending a private message to ask.

Thanks.

ADMIN REMINDER:

WE all need to remember that links are required to information stated as fact (unless a VI and posting within their area of expertise).

NO LINK, NO POST !!

Hey everyone,

This thread is for sharing information, not debating or bickering or winning an argument.

State your opinion, post your link to info, then move on without feeling the need to comment on every single detail of every single post. It takes over the thread and none of us are here to hammer our own opinion into the heads of other members.

Thank you.

Parents send student to school while knowingly infected with coronavirus

A Covid-19 positive student attended class on Monday, but the school wasn't notified of their diagnosis until the next day, the Attleboro (MA) High School superintendent said in a letter sent out to families Tuesday night. Twenty-eight students who had close contact with the infected person have been notified and asked to quarantine for 14 days.

The parents told the city health department that while they found out their child tested positive on September 11, they thought that the child could go to school after quarantining for several days.
How ignorant do the parents have to be, to knowingly send a child, diagnosed with Covid19, to school? SMDH

200,000 people is an enormous amount of people. Whether that be .0001%, .001%, 1%, 10% or whatever of a population.

I think of the stadium I used to go to in the US. Capacity 73,000. Loads and loads of people in there.
The current death toll in the US is approaching 3 of those sold-out stadiums. Poof! Gone. In less than 9 months.

Bless each and every one of them. All of them, all around the world. Lives lost too soon.

IMO

The point is they are not all in one (or three) soccer stadia but spread out far and wide across a whole sub continent. It would be similar to adding together the whole of Europe's cases and deaths, or the whole of South America deaths, for example IMO.

This is going to go down in the history books, for sure.
Just as we read about the pandemic of 1918/19/20 ... generations to come will read about the pandemic of 2020/21/22.

IMO

Wouldn't it be nice if we could skip 2022 being included in that date range? I hope we can.

IMO we will definitely skip 22 and maybe 21 too. I am remembering how H1N1 just disappeared and governments had leftover vaccinations. Hoping the same will happen with this scourge. The Spanish flu hung around because spread was much slower then, far fewer hosts to spread it. We have medication and vaccines already manufactured and sold just awaiting authorisation and distribution.
MOO

200,000 people is an enormous amount. However, we have 331,002,651 people in the US currently.

So that is 330million, 800 thousand who did not die. I am thankful for that.

[Also, of that 200,000, about 20 to 30 percent may have actually died of other illnesses, according to recent CDC reports about how things are listed. They have estimated that only about 7o to 80 % of deaths listed as COVID were actually deaths attributed to the virus itself. So , many of these deaths may have happened anyway from other serious illnesses. ]

Absolutely. I will never dispute that. I just cannot understand minimising of 200,000 deaths though.

So many times I see 'only 12,000 deaths' ... 'just *advertiser censored* amount of deaths'. These are all big numbers of lives lost.

I am not trying to minimise their deaths. I am just trying to put the numbers in context.

Australia has about 24 million people. There is a big difference between trying to control an epidemic in a country of 331million compared to a country of 24 million.

Australia has about same population as our state of California.

Australia is approximately 7,741,220 sq km, while United States is approximately 9,833,517 sq km, making United States 27% larger than Australia. Meanwhile, the population of Australia is ~23.2 million people (303.4 million more people live in United States).

So Australia is about the same size as the US, but has about 1/12th the population. So it is not a surprise that we had a much harder task in trying to control a very infectious virus. We have many dense urban areas in comparison.

So to put it in context, Our nation has 12x the population in the same size of land. So 200,000 deaths, as tragic and horrible as it is, does not come as a huge surprise. JMO IMO

I feel kinda guilty, waiting and hoping for folks to become infected.

Fauci would bet on effective and safe coronavirus vaccine by November or December

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said Wednesday that he would bet on a coronavirus vaccine to be proven safe and effective before the end of 2020.

‘‘I would still put my money on November/December,” he said, during a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute panel on global pandemics.

Fauci, 79, one of the most trusted faces of the coronavirus task force, said his informed projection was calculated based on where the clinical trial sites are in their studies, according to CNN.

He added that researchers need to see about 150 infections occur in a vaccine trial for it to be deemed safe and effective.
