Actually sat down to do a real sketch of the skull based on the PM photo.
The mustache, et al are interpretations of the area below the nose, not seen in the PM photo.

Thank you for taking the time to do this coffeeandacig!

What a sad case.

I agree with your artistic ‘interpretation’ that there would be very marked disfigurement & scarring associated with this injury.....based on the appearance of the skull & reconstructive surgery.

I think if this had happened here in UK it would be relatively easy to trace where this type of very specialised surgery would have been performed...however in USA obviously very different.

Hard to believe that no-one has recognised this description but maybe people who knew him when/after he suffered this injury, are not the type of people to come forward to authorities or just unaware of attempts to identify him.

This poor guy needs genetic genealogy :( The case makes me so sad. He probably had very rough times and decided to take his own life because of this. Maybe insecurities on top of it. We need get DDP involved.

Agreed, this poor man must have suffered greatly. Can’t help thinking this severity of damage was likely the result of a violent attack....retribution/punishment for something.

Oral & Maxillofacial surgery is a very specialised field & surgeons highly qualified in both Medicine & Dentistry....a long training at a specialist centre.

There is such a training programme at the University of Louisville Dental School, based in Louisville....approximately 100 miles from Falmouth KY.

Falmouth itself is small with a population of about 2000 ( in 2010) so surely would be known if he’d been seen around there....though I suppose his identity may not have been known if he wasn’t a local.

I’m sure checks would have been made at oral maxillofacial centres around the area, but suppose it depends how invested investigators were to identify him....particularly if labelled as suicide.

If his injuries had been the result of an attack may have travelled quite a distance, in fear of his life.

Apologies, I’m sure this has probably already been discussed & I’m new to this particular case & yet to read the thread....which won’t take long.

This case is so sad : (

Thinking he may have been brought to a major centre/city following the injury, then after discharge from hospital, drifted to Falmouth.......depressed, in great pain, with no money, perhaps in fear of his life. Maybe he had no one to return to...or feared for their safety if he went back....

I honestly believe he was never reported missing (or if he was, his case was never put into any databases).

That being said, here's a few people that would be worth ruling out at the very least-
1206DMTX - Ruben Cantu Ruben Cantu, missing from TX. Age, race, and height all match up. It says he's disabled but there's nothing to indicate what sort of disability he has.
The Doe Network: Case File 388DMWI James Ruland, missing from WI. He's a little outside of the height range (6'0) but he has a plate in the back of his head. No visible scarring/deformities from the one picture available, but the plate stuck out enough to include him.
4284DMSD - Robert Lue Verne Odman Sr. Robert Odman, missing from SD. Kind of a longshot- older and taller than UID and circumstances don't really line up, but he's blind in one eye and his face looks a bit asymmetrical.
1034DMCA - Donald Marcelino Alvarez-Vallecillo Donald Alvarez-Vallecillo, missing from CA. Age, race, and height match, and both had moustaches. Donald is listed as having multiple scars on his forehead and around his eyes.
963DMOK - Jesse Wayne Yancey Jesse Yancey, missing from OK. He's Native American, but age and height match. "facial bones under right eye crushed in a previous injury"
The Doe Network: Case File 1016DMIN Daniel Sandifer, missing from IN. Black hair with a moustache, age and height match, previously fractured jaw.
This is the second time that both Jesse Yancey and Daniel Sandifer have been suggested; I'm wondering if it's worth submitting these two. Sort of long shots but even if they can't be ruled out, it's more attention brought to this poor guy who, imo, is a solvable case.

Poor guy
He must have suffered so much. Probably in chronic pain after such extensive injuries. Id also say blunt force trauma to the face, likely from a car accident. He must have been unconscious for many weeks and then spent time in and out of hospital for many months and years after. Such extensive reconstruction surgery frequently comes with surgical readjustments to improve feelings, facial anatomy and the fine nasal structure.
With a face permanently scarred and crooked, maybe blind on one eye and in chronic pain he probably got addicted to pain medication. And he likely had no work (nobody can work with chronic pain) and nobody to care for him and love him.
I think it was a clear suicide. Nobody would want to live like that.
He needs his name back soon.

I agree that they should both be called in, at least to rule them out if nothing else.

When my fiancé had to get dentures (his side of the family have severe teeth issues, his brother even grew in some of his teeth upside down, She was using very heavily when pregnant then refused them health and dental care :( so their teeth just got worse and worse over time) so when I got him on health insurance the first thing i did was get him set up for dentures and during that process the dentist was explaining the identification numbers on the dentures. I believe even some dental implants -usually bridges- have it too.
when my very close friend and neighbor had her knee replaced it was the same with the ID. I thought it was really interesting because I’ve never known all of that.
as for my brother, he runs in a tough crowd.. I worry all the time about his safety because he feels he can lip off to all the wrong people, when his accident happened he was pulled over because a cop seen him driving all over the road with blood all over the outside of car and when he got to him my brothers face was completely swollen, his eyes were bloody and he couldn’t see, teeth broken, ribs broken, it was bad. He didn’t even know the people who did it either. It’s a scary world. My family had to keep my kids away from him because he looked horrifying and very disfigured for quite awhile. It scared them.
The injuries to John Does face is very similar, a crowbar or bat can do extensive damage, the 90’s were the “brass knuckles era”, those alone can completely turn your skull into nothing. They also think that John Doe was deceased for months before being found. I’m seriously doubting suicide (imo). Is there a neighborhood near the wooded area he was found?
I wonder if anyone contacted any hospitals or surgeons after he was found to see if anyone had extensive facial reconstruction within those past few years?
Someone had to have been missing him!

I have to presume that LE were immediately on the issue of contacting specific hospitals within a certain area that specialize in the type of reconstructive surgery needed for such catastrophic injuries. Or at the very least contacted local hospitals that could advise them where to start their search.

Here's a link regarding the types of constructive surgery for facial fractures. It appears that of the LeFort fractures, level III fractures comprise about only 10%.

https://rad.washington.edu/about-us...diology-book/facial-and-mandibular-fractures/

This link discusses the circumstances that can cause level III fractures.

Facial Fracture Management Handbook - LeFort Fractures | Iowa Head and Neck Protocols).

I agree with you in thinking this individual did not commit suicide. I also believe his injuries, severe enough to cause LeFort III fractures are the result of an assault probably with a tire iron or a crowbar.

Judging by the way the skull was put back together I believe the injuries occurred in the fairly recent past. Was there a description of the type of screws used to hold the bones together? This article states titanium screws and plates don't need to be removed but stainless steel ones must be removed after 6 to 12 months. It could give us an indication as to when the surgery occurred and if death occurred during the recuperation period.

I am very curious about the rosary and scapular the deceased had on them. Both appear to be homemade. The scapular is usually related to the Carmelite order of which there are both sisters and brothers (friars). There is a Carmelite order of sisters in Kentucky. Carmelite nuns make rosaries and scapulars. There is an image on their website which shows a scapular almost identical to the one found with the deceased.

Embroidered Large Scapular with Brown Label

Carmelite friars and sisters can be identified as decalced which means 'without shoes' meaning they used to go barefoot. Now they usually wear espadrilles. If this gentleman committed suicide where are his shoes? Unless someone already came across the deceased and removed his clothes and shoes they should be in the general area, even if animals dispersed them.

If he didn't commit suicide then it means he was murdered. Was he just a pious individual who happened to carry the two items associated with the Carmelite orders or was he a member?

Post #1 in this thread states that this guy had Synthes 2.0 plates and screws, which seem to be permanent and are made of titanium, so sadly that can't really give us a timeline. Post #1 also says its believed that he received these injuries 3 months to 2yrs prior to his death (idk how you could tell, maybe by the amount of healing they could see to his skull? or his skin was intact enough to see recent scarring?)
And I'd love to think that law enforcement had gone around and checked local hospitals for Le Fort reconstruction patients, but its hard to know for sure if due diligence was done in this case considering the lack of info that's out there. Are there any news articles or bulletins from when this happened that are still out there online?
I would be ecstatic if DNA Doe ever picked up this case.

It's hard to say what articles are out there. There should be some online stories or at least some archived articles. Mummified remains aren't usually found in these circumstances, out in the elements on that climate so it should have sparked some local interest.

Source: Naked Suicide

Approximately 95 percent of completed suicides are associated with mental illness.10 Naked suicide, by itself, does not suggest a specific mental disorder. As noted above, individuals who jump to their deaths naked may be psychotic. The psychodynamics of a naked suicide often remain opaque.

Naked suicide suggests a variety of psychological themes. The shedding of clothes may symbolize a new beginning, a rebirth and cleansing, or a sloughing off of the world. In the biblical description of Christ's resurrection, his clothes, a symbol of an unregenerate world, were left behind as he ascended into heaven.11

Anger and vengeance can be expressed by completing suicide while naked, especially when it is intended to traumatize a survivor. The shock of discovering a naked suicide inflicts an indelible, traumatic memory that can haunt a survivor for a lifetime.12 The person who completes suicide while naked may intend to add insult to a suicide survivor's already devastating injury.

In severely depressed individuals, a naked suicide may be an expression of vulnerability, utter despair, desolation, and worthlessness. Psychotic patients may be responding to delusions or auditory hallucinations commanding them to commit suicide while naked as a self-abasement.

In an illustrative case example, a suicidal psychiatric inpatient with a psychotic depression (case disguised) believed that he was the cause of the world's calamities. During suicide risk assessment, it was discovered that the patient planned a naked suicide to atone for his “sins” by becoming a “sacrificial lamb, shorn of my clothes.”

OT- I can't find a thread here for JY or DS. Could someone else please check, in case I missed it? If they don't have threads, I will start one for them...
I didn’t find one for either.

ETA: Oops, I had the spelling wrong on Standifer. Thanks Melt!!

Interesting...thank you.

This is a small, likely irrelevant detail, but does anyone know what the “woven wire” he was found hanging by could be?

I know in farming terms ‘woven wire’ refers to the type of fencing where you have vertical & horizontal wires knotted together to form a mesh of different sizes...depending on the size of livestock you’re trying to keep in, or out, of the enclosure....... large holes for sheep etc......smaller mesh to keep foxes out of the chicken run or rabbits out of the veg patch.

I took it to mean he’d used part of an old wire fence he’d probably found & fashioned into a noose of sorts, but my assumption may be incorrect.

It may simply mean that he used several strands of wire woven together to form a stronger noose.

Ahh ok. That makes sense. I was basically trying to get an idea of where he (or someone else) could have picked it up. Thank you!

Would you look at that!! Our very own! :) Thanks again @coffeeandacig for making a proper sketch of our guy!

Thanks @MadMcGoo and all of you!!! Glad to do it!
I think of this man often. :( I wonder if there is a teaching hospital in KY or TN that did his reconstruction?
