The family says they were told Quawan Charles drowned. Now they are seeking an independent autopsy.

Charles was reported missing on Friday October 30 in Baldwin. Family members say Charles left his home with a 17 year old friend and the teen's mother without permission.

Charles was found dead in a rural area off Ed Broussard Road near Loreauville three days later on November 3, 2020.

"They still have not shown us where Quawan was or what creek he was found at. We can't even go and put up a cross where he was found at. They're being very discreet," Celina Charles, the spokesperson for the family says.

Celina Charles says one reason she and other family members don't believe Quawan drowned is a graphic photo of Quawan's body circulating on social media.

"His face is disfigured. So there's some explaining that needs to be done there. His face is disfigured," Charles said.

Baldwin family left with more questions as investigation into teens death continues

On October 30, 2020, Janet Irvin and her 17-year-old son took Bobby from his home without his parents’ permission. Around 3:00pm that day, Bobby’s mother, Roxanne Nelson, began calling Bobby in an attempt to find out where he was. Around 8:00pm—after no one heard back from him for hours— Bobby’s mother and father called 911 to report their son missing and both Baldwin Police Department and West St. Mary Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence. To pacify the family, law enforcement said that Bobby was probably at football game and dismissed their fears. Despite the family’s pleas, no Amber Alert was ever issued.

Family, activists demand justice for Quawan 'Bobby' Charles, Black teen found dead in rural Iberia Parish

WARNING: Graphic Photos at Link

A has raised more than $70,000 in three days for Bobby's family to cover costs of an independent autopsy and burial expenses. The online fundraiser depicts an image of Emmett Till, the Chicago 14-year-old who was murdered by White supremists in 1955 while visiting family in Mississippi, beside the alleged photo of Bobby.

"I can't say that it was racially motivated. I can't say that it wasn't racially motivated," said André Arceneaux, a Lafayette activist who started the for the Charles family. "I just know that if you look at the picture of Quawan, and you look at the picture of Emmett Till, there are a lot of similarities, and it does appear that he was lynched."

ETA - Anyone with information concerning the case is urged to contact Detective Jarred Spurlock of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-369-3711.

I've just read this thread. What in the world?? This is shocking....
How can the family be told the boy drowned?? by whom, authorities?

And who is that mother and son who took Bobby from his home? What is their relationship to Bobby?

This happened in my area. It is a rural area that has miles and miles of sugarcane farmland and the Teche Bayou. The police and sheriff’ departments are small and poorly funded.
Unfortunately, a photo of the deceased child has been posted on social media. The is a group of activists that have been sharing the photo and IMO relishing in the publicity. Unity 7 is one of the groups that is bringing attention to issues with it’s dealing with blacks.

What is Bobby's friends mom saying? May be that I'm missing that part? Where did they go?

Teche explained the terrain so would kids go there? If so for what?

Special thanks, Teche for that info. Very important. Another kid. 15. Fifteen!

“Due to the lack of transparency, collective indifference, and moral failings of law enforcement, Bobby’s family has been forced to undertake the serious financial cost and enormous emotional stress of arranging for an independent autopsy in order to get any answers about Bobby’s death. The cost of this independent autopsy was not just financial for Bobby’s family, it has greatly worsened the grieving process by delaying when they can put their child to rest,” wrote Haley. “We need to know, at the least, the preliminary findings of the coroner as to the cause of death, and we want answers from the Baldwin Police Department as to why an Amber Alert was never issued in the days that this child was missing.”

Baldwin Police Department Assistant Chief of Police Samuel Wise III issued a statement Tuesday, Nov. 10 through the agency’s Facebook page responding to the growing criticism.

“We are not investigating the death of a body found in Loreauville, Iberia Parish. However, the Baldwin Police Department will be investigating reasons why the deceased juvenile was missing from his residence in Baldwin. Proper protocol was used to report the juvenile as missing and all procedures were followed thru within the Baldwin jurisdiction,” wrote Wise III.

In an update shared through the sheriff’s office Facebook page Tuesday, Nov. 10, investigators say multiple people have been interviewed and evidence is being processed. Results from an autopsy ordered by law enforcement are still pending.

“He was found dead under mysterious circumstances, and we just want an honest and thorough investigation with the Iberia Parish Sheriff Department,” the teen’s stepfather, Jason Nelson, said previously.

Anyone with information concerning this death is asked to contact the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Investigation at 337-369-3711.
Attorney questions lack of Amber Alert before missing La. teen’s ‘suspicious’ death

Jason Nelson, the boy’s stepfather, told KLFY, a local news station, that the woman who picked Charles up did not have permission from his parents. Nelson warned others with kids to know “your children’s friends very well, and always know where they’re at. Know where their friends live.”

“Don’t trust just anybody with your kids,” Charles’ mother, Roxanne Nelson, added.

I may have missed it, but has it been said how he was found?

Quawan “Bobby” Charles left his home in Baldwin, Louisiana, and his body was spotted Nov. 2 in a sugarcane field by an Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office drone near Loreauville, located about 20 miles away.

Is sugar cane still being harvested right now?

Yes. The harvest typically goes from September to December/January.
