Family seeks justice for 'hate crime' that left gay LSUE student in critical condition

• White had been talking to Seneca on Grindr for about a week.
• White and Seneca planned to meet up in person Saturday.
• Seneca picked up White at his apartment and took White to a residential location on Maryview Farm Road in Lafayette.
• Seneca tortured White for an unknown amount of time.
• Seneca called 911 and said he had murdered a man.
• White was discovered naked in a bathtub with stab wounds to his neck, strangulation wounds, blunt force trauma to the back of his head and cuts so deep into his wrists that his hands were nearly severed.

Police arrested 19-year-old Chance Seneca, of Lafayette, in connection with the stabbing. He was at the home when police arrived. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Seneca is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear before a judge Tuesday.

The police department is not investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Friends and family say the victim in a weekend stabbing was targeted for being gay. Now, they want the charges upgraded to reflect that.

The suspect in the case, Chance Seneca, is facing attempted second degree murder charges, but White's friends and family say he should be charged with a hate crime.

According to the U.S Department of Justice, a hate crime is a crime motivated by bias against several classifications, including sexual orientation. A spokesperson for the Lafayette Police Department says detectives have not found any evidence so far that indicates this is a hate crime.

The Lafayette Police Department confirms the investigation is still underway.

The above article was from June, and in looking for more recent info on his condition I noticed that Holden did a Facebook live with updates on how he's doing back in August. He seems to be doing quite well. Voice sounds good, he has some numbness in one hand, but the thing that bothers him the most is short-term memory problems. He was able to discuss the attack calmly and overall looks to be handling to situation amazingly well.

A federal grand jury in Lafayette returned a six-count indictment charging Chance J. Seneca, 19, of Lafayette, with hate crime, kidnapping, firearm, and obstruction charges based on his attempted murder of a gay man and his overarching scheme to kidnap and murder gay men whom he met online.

The indictment alleges that on June 19 and 20, 2020, Seneca attempted to kidnap one man and successfully kidnapped two other men through his use of Grindr, a dating application for gay and bisexual men, according to a release. The indictment further alleges that the defendant attempted to murder one of these men because of his gender and sexual orientation, and that the defendant intended to dismember and keep parts of the victim’s body as trophies, mementos, and food. The indictment further alleges that Seneca possessed a firearm in furtherance of the hate crime, and that he tried to cover up his actions by deleting communications between himself and the victim of the attempted murder.
