CDC quietly changes Covid vaccine guidance to OK mixing Pfizer and Moderna shots in 'exceptional situations'

"It was important for the CDC to put out this guidance, Schaffner said, because the vaccine registry systems across the country, which are run by states, vary in quality. So some information may be lost, leaving people unaware of which vaccine they received."

Evidently, no federal guideline on how to register the vaccines and keep track of what is going on?

I recall reading much earlier that the 'system' was essentially "here are your doses, now do what you will". With, of course, some states performing better than others. As Dr Fauci says ... the actual distribution has been clocking along okay.
I think the failing has been in preparing federal guidance on a good system that may work. With tweaks added here and there if something isn't working well.

I get to register for the vaccine on Monday! All but one of my coworkers and I are super excited!

After the second one I'm going to finally go to the eye doctor, the dentist, and the dermatologist. I've been putting visits off for a year. Oh, and I need a hair cut. Just a quick trim.

I am excited for you! That is awesome!
I can’t wait to do the same things.

awesome!
I put off dentist checkup/cleaning and turns out I shouldn't have because now I have two cavities, one of which needs a root canal that requires a specialist and the specialist hasn't contacted me yet after the dentist sent the referral so now I guess I just live in pain until they have an opening
and I only discovered the second cavity a day or two after my dental visit for the first one - so now I have to go back again and the lockdown restrictions had just changed so I hope I'm still allowed

Congratulations! It's good that most of your coworkers will also be vaccinated.

I too will visit my dentist, dermatologist, and eye doc. I have been trimming my own hair but I'd love to get a proper cut. And I want (need) to return to the gym.

So sorry to hear this. I have lost many friends and acquaintances, and two church members.

Oh, how awful for you. I am so sorry. May healing come quickly. It's hard for me to remember that some people know many who have died when I don't even know anyone who's been sick, at least not directly. I hope that the change in government direction in the US will result in getting the virus under control, seeing consistently fewer cases, and ending the carnage.

I'm sorry that you'll need a root canal and that you are in pain. Good luck with your dental work.

Dang. I’m sorry.

I had posted this comment in another thread specifically about the vaccine supplies. Please take it as a tongue-in-cheek post with a very genuine concern. I have enormous respect for all countries dealing with this nightmare virus.

Please excuse my ignorance if this has been posted and discussed - it is my first comment in this forum/thread.

What is with Canada, Japan, and Australia turning into Irma - my "dig in everyone's trash to collect random items" hoarding neighbor?

According to NBC News, Australia, Canada, and Japan are being accused of hoarding tons of vaccine - hence, my comparison to Irma.

Currently, Canada is reported to have enough vaccine for every single citizen 6 times over. And Austrailia has approximately 1% of worldwide COVID-19 cases, and yet, they have 6% of the total amount of vaccine in the world!
If Japan is thrown into the mix - these three countries have a total of 20% of all the total vaccine available worldwide. Wow. It's like toilet paper 6 months ago. Or, Costco selling vaccine and 3 people buy everything.

I have no distain for the health officials in these three countries. Actually, just the opposite. These countries, obviously, have great concern for their citizens and wanted to secure as much vaccine as possible.

The health officials in Japan, Australia, and Canada are concerned about their citizens and they acted quickly. Frankly, sitting here in the US, I am quite envious.
I would like to ask other posters if they have an issue with so much vaccine in places where there are less victims. Obviously, the vaccine will not be used right away as there is so much excess. What if other countries are in need of vaccine immediately and there is none available? Should victims have to endure suffering and death just because their country's health officials were unable to get vaccine when available? And, should country's like Australia be made to give up their stock?

Honestly, I am at a loss on this one. With so much death, even one day makes a huge impact. The sooner ALL people have access to the vaccine, the better off our world will be. This virus just sucks and there have already been so many who've died. I hate to think of healthy people who are ready to be vaccinated waiting even a day or an hour.

I am one of the lucky ones. My sister in law is a nurse.
She asked me if I could get to her hospital in an hour, they had 5 doses left from a clinic today. She assured me that all hospital employees in all areas-cafeteria to janitors to parking garage employees had been given a dose before me, and that these 5 doses were not to go to waste. I am fortunate that my work acknowledges this blessing and I could leave working from home to drive down on work time.
I'm writing this to let you know that I scanned a QR code with my phone once I arrived at the hospital. This linked me up to the hospital website where I put in my information and included the current time as my appointment. While filling out this info, there is a question about insurance. Even though you will be asked the question of being covered and by whom (private, medicare, etc.), the choices are gray on the screen-you can't fill this area in because the vaccine is free for everyone.
You also receive a card with the date of your next dose and an email reminder will be sent to you to make the next appointment.
This is at a major hospital in Los Angeles today.
I hope this helps someone!

"Packed us together like sardines": Guard deployed to Capitol struggles to contain COVID — POLITICO

“The National Guard has struggled to implement a plan to test troops flowing into and out of Washington, D.C., for Covid-19, with some Guard members being forced to find their own tests and others pressured to leave their quarantine early to report to duty.

Already, hundreds of Guard members who poured into Washington, D.C., after the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol have tested positive for Covid-19 or are quarantining in nearby hotels, three Guard sources said. Guard leadership has declined to release an official number of positive cases, but troops and lawmakers alike worry that the deployment is becoming a superspreader event.”

ug I posted before this started, are they going to test them before they go to DC. guess they are testing them before they leave? I hope so.

Good thing we didn't waver on keeping those Australian Open tennis players in mandatory quarantine.

Day Seven and a quarantined player has tested positive and feels unwell.

I think she is now the 11th Australian Open incomer who has tested positive for covid.

Australian Open player tests positive for COVID-19 after complaining about quarantine

I recall the US Open players having problems too- for an athlete to have no practice for 2 weeks they will certainly lose conditioning- lose muscle. I think the US Open players got to practice outside with one practice partner on their team for very limited periods of time. If their practice partner tested positive, they both had to go into lock down. I read this article about AUS- did not realize that someone on their plane tested positive. reinforces how crazy flying and holding international sports competitions during a pandemic is. very stressful for the competitors and a health risk. The US Open was done with no spectators, as I recall. Will there be any in AUS?

Canada does not "have" 455 million doses, but "has" received 1.2 million doses. Also Canada, Japan and Australia along with most other countries in the world are members of COVAX (global initiative to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all countries, regardless of income level) so are very vested in the global effort. Notable exceptions to membership in COVAX are the USA, China and Russia. I'm not sure why you would be envious, the US has it's own Pfizer production facility and is keeping all those doses for US citizens. Other countries are dependent on importing and subject to supply chain issues, in fact Canada is receiving none of it's expected Pfizer supply for the next couple of weeks from Belgium.

. I’m in Canada and your info isn’t exactly correct. I believe Canada did order from many countries but so far we have received only a small bit of Pfizer and perhaps a small bit of Moderna. Pfizer has now shorted us for second doses due to upgrading their distribution plant in Europe. None of the other companies have even yet come through with vaccine. I’m 77 years old with a 75 year old compromised husband. Today we listened to the tv broadcast of when and what to expect in the roll out. For us, they said optimistically we might get our first shot in April. I’m more concerned now about knowing the second shot will be available when required then I am about how soon I get the first shot. I’m feeling apprehensive for the few already vaccinated who at present have no idea when the next batch of Pfizer will arrive and when their second dose will happen or if the time delay will alter the results.

I can speak for Australia. We don't actually have any of the vaccines yet - not a single one of us has been vaccinated.

We are meant to be getting 10,000,000 doses of Pfizer in 'early 2021'. I saw them speaking about it on TV the other night .. for healthcare workers and long term care residents & workers .. maybe next month.

I don't know where you are getting the 'hordes' from. We have bought in to 4 vaccines. Which means we have provided money for their research and development.
None of them are available yet (except Pfizer, which we are yet to receive). When AstraZeneca becomes available we will be manufacturing it for ourselves and other countries in our vicinity.

With regard to should we be getting vaccinated when others are in such a mess, primarily of their own doing. Yes, we should. We haven't sacrificed everything that we have sacrificed for nothing. (Our low case rate didn't happen by magic or 'because we are an island' or because it was 'easier for them'.)

That is like saying "You have been a good boy Johnnie and tried so hard, as a reward you get nothing. Just live under your restrictions till we get every other contaminated place done".

Australia’s vaccine agreements

We have also heavily agreed to Covax ... that is, to help vaccinate the underpriviliged areas of the world. Which is something that the US has not done.

And we still have 40,000 Aussies overseas (the number keeps on growing as the world deteriorates) that are coming home in dribs and drabs (6,000 per week) due to our very strict covid controls.

As for people like myself, I likely won't be vaccinated until October or so.
At least 20 months of restrictions for me. A full year and three quarters, or more.

They will allow 50-75% capacity spectators, depending how we are doing in February when the Australian Open is held. There will be three venues, no mixing of spectators in those venues. If you go to one venue, you go to no other venue.
If an outbreak happens, the spectators will be further reduced or go down to zero.

The athletes have been allowed to train for 5 hours daily in training bubbles. I believe that means two players and two staff together, no mixing of bubbles. Then back into 14-day quarantine.

There are 75 or so people under strict 14-day quarantine due to the covid that was discovered on their flight here. They have to train in their rooms, against backboards that have been set up.

They all agreed to these conditions. No matter how much they are whinging, they signed up for the terms of playing in the Australian Open.

They also have plenty of time to train (3 weeks after quarantine) before the Open begins. This was all planned with a 3 week cushion to allow for covid cases to be discovered and dealt with.

A ‘perfect storm’ is brewing in the global response to Covid, WEF risk report panelist warns

This article, I believe, was source material for the report on NBC News -

Okay. I truly apologize if I offended anyone - this was not my intention. As I watched the early edition of NBC News, this was a big story - I actually was able to quote the reporter as I was typing the post. The word 'hoarding' was used several times in regards to the amount of vaccine each country has- again, I meant no disrespect and I sincerely apologize for any disrespect- it is NEVER okay to provoke or purposely offend anyone in a forum such as this.

I am, actually, very interested in what others think about how much vaccine each country has - as most of you are aware, the US has had a very tumultuous year and there are many questions about who gets the vaccine and who doesn't. I am truly interested in what other areas of the world are doing or if this has been an issue. I mean, let's face it, the United States has not handled the COVID-19 pandemic very well -
I do want to know what is happening in our neighbor countries.

Again, I am sorry if the post offended you or if you felt I was being disrespectful. That was never my intention.
