City of Phoenix halts sports facility reservations as coronavirus cases rise

In another meaningless "feel good" gesture, the Phoenix Mayor has closed sports facilities (including at outdoor parks.) Reports are that youth tournaments are leaving AZ for Texas.

I don't know about other places, but things here are very contentious. Clear and deep divide between those that are living with a semblance of normality and those that want everyone forcibly confined to their homes.

Gov. Ducey plans no further business restrictions as COVID-19 spreads

Ducey spokesman CJ Karamargin said the illness is spreading across Arizona, as well as other states with harsher business limitations, mostly because of small family gatherings, not because people are eating out and going to the gym.

"Most of the spread we are seeing now is not being traced to businesses," Karamargin said. "Most of it is traced to small gatherings of family and friends ... There is no closure that is going to fix that.

Group of 7,000 Arizona healthcare workers urge governor to take additional mitigation measures

”Listen, COVID-19 is throwing missiles at us and Governor Ducey thinks he can protect the people of Arizona by handing out umbrellas,” said Dr. Cadey Harrel.

Dr. Harrel joined 7,000 Arizona health care professionals urging Governor Ducey to implement new, statewide protocols.

They want the governor to create a statewide mask mandate, limit group sizes, including at sporting events and potentially issue another stay-at-home order.

Stats: COVID-19 spreading in Arizona faster than anywhere else

Arizona Rt

Rt went from highest in the nation to below one with no additional mitigation. There appears to be enough data, from around the county, to show that closing bars and restaurants are symbolic gestures.

Arizona's Rt hasn't been below since September 7.

According to 91-divoc.com, a COVID-19 tracking site that uses data from John Hopkins University, Arizona currently has the highest COVID-19 per capita rate of any region in the world.

The state is reporting 121.8 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past seven days per 100,000 people. California, the state with the second highest number of newly confirmed cases in the past seven days per 100,000 people comes in at 97.8.

Same thing was said in the Summer, with half the case rate. It was presented as "apocalyptic," then. This is still a problem when it comes to reaching people who are still in denial because it smacks of crying "Wolf!" In any event, the Governor's Spokesman reiterated that States with draconian mitigation policies are in essentially the same boat, so no closures are coming. Everyone I talk to comments on the number of cars with California plates in Phoenix.

I've noticed a change in people who were fond of saying "all this goes away the day after the election." As they come to grips with January. 2021, they seem concerned for the first time.

Ducey reaffirms COVID plan, vaccine hopes in State of the State address

Governor Ducey addressed Covid in his State of the State address, yesterday. The main takeaways were a continued assertion that lock downs do more harm than good, that States with mask mandates and draconian closures are no better off, and that he will not give Arizona Mayors the "keys" to implement their own closures and lock downs.

Personal experience, over the weekend, at stores, bars, restaurants and on twitter seemed to reflect a more extreme division. People on twitter are irate that the Governor is "killing people" through inaction. On the flip side, people "out and about" seem to have stopped caring, all together. I saw no mask signs or capacity counters at Walmart, restaurants at more than 50% capacity and people at a bar not caring that regular patrons and a member of the staff tested positive. It's like a different world from last May when a server told us there were no straws because the ones they had weren't deemed safe, and salt came in little packets.

ADHS - Data Dashboard

Per ABC 15's data analyst, AZ's week-over-week case count is in decline. (It is interesting reading the reaction on social. The spike-and-recede nature of coronaviruses has been demonstrated, time and again, yet there is still this need to attribute it to something more tangible.)

ADHS - Data Dashboard

Cases and hospitalizations are in decline despite no new mitigation measures. Twitter feeds for local reporters that cover the pandemic are stuck in an endless loop - reporters call for closures, some citizens blame the Governor for every death while others argue that closures haven't worked elsewhere. Same thing, every day. We went up to Prescott (90 minutes north of Phoenix) for the weekend. It seemed like every bar and restaurant had AZDHS guidelines posted at the door, but weren't enforcing those measures, once inside. It was good to see live music had returned to every venue on "Whiskey Row."

Metrics continue to improve, across the board. Lobbyists from our major healthcare chains are engaged in a PR campaign to close restaurants and bars.

This story provides an interesting case study in alternative history. For example:

“What stands out to me is that it took too long to do that intervention in June, and that’s partially what led to the July crisis,” said Will Humble, the state’s former public health director and one of several health and policy experts who spoke to ABC15 about the past year. “…the success of that intervention, the success of closing the bars, nightclubs, and having the restaurants go back to takeout was dramatic.”

Mr. Humble knows what he said is blatantly false, because he was quoted constantly, during that "intervention," complaining the restaurants were not only still open, but were open for indoor dining, and that restaurant bars were also open. The reporter who wrote the story knows this, as well, as she has been Arizona's most vocal advocate for the closing of restaurants and bars.

What makes this insidious is not only do they know what they are saying is false, but that they doing it to affect policy change under the guise of science. Very scary in a 1984 kind of way.

ADHS - Data Dashboard

Metrics falling, across the board. Curious if our lack of mitigation is being used as an example, other places. Our Governor has pointed to other States where draconian mitigation measures had no effect on the Winter surge.

ADHS

Same downward trends. The chatter on the Governor's twitter feed has gone way down. There were fervent demands for restaurant and bar closures and additional mask mandates, but the predicted collapse of our health care system never materialized.

ADHS - Data Dashboard

Numbers continue to improve, at an accelerating pace. It's been inconvenient for local pundits who spoke with absolute certainty that our health care system would collapse without specific mitigations.
