ROMULUS, MI – Prosecutors claim a group of men accused of killing Egypt Covington almost four years ago did so while trying to steal marijuana from a medical care giver and went to the wrong home.
The preliminary examination of Timothy Eugene Moore, Shandon Ray Groom and Shane Lamar Evans began Monday, March 22, with prosecutors presenting evidence that each man was involved in the slaying of Covington during what appeared to be a case of plotting to steal drugs and entering one duplex apartment when they meant to enter the other.

ROMULUS, MI – Prosecutors claim a group of men accused of killing Egypt Covington almost four years ago did so while trying to steal marijuana from a medical care giver and went to the wrong home.

*Arraignment Hearing for all (@ 9am CT) - MI – Egypt Covington (27) (June 23, 2017, found shot & killed in her house, Belleville) – *Timothy Eugene Moore (31 @ time of crime/34/now 35) arrested (11/5/20) & charged (11/8/20) & recharged (3/23/21) with 1 count each of 1st degree murder, felony murder, 1st degree home invasion & 3 counts of felony weapons/firearm. Plead not guilty. Held without bond.

3/22/21 Update: DA presented the case against all 3 defendants. During a preliminary exam, those closest to Covington testified that she didn’t know the three men. Covington lived on the left side of a duplex. Steven Edwards lived across the hall, on the other side of the duplex. He placed defendant Shane Evans at the home. Evans worked for a lawn care company that mowed the lawn there. Edwards said he placed Evans with the two others, Moore & Groom, in Sumpter Township. He said he saw Moore & Evans together at Evans’ home nearby. Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Victoria Shackleford used the phrase “robbery gone bad.” Attorneys for the defendants focused on Covington’s ex-boyfriend & said he was violent. The defense for one of the men also raised the possibility that Sumpter Township police took a cell phone into evidence at the murder scene & deleted everything on it. The evidence tech from Sumpter said he couldn’t say what happened to the phone once he bagged it for evidence. The hearing is expected to continue on Tuesday, 3/23/21.

Moore was bound over for trial on 1 count each of 1st degree murder, felony murder, 1st degree home invasion & 4 counts of felony firearm. (Count 4: Possession of firearm by felon dismissed on 3/25/21). Plead not guilty.

Covington lived on the left side of a duplex. Steven Edwards lived across the hall, on the other side of the duplex. He placed defendant Shane Evans at the home. Evans worked for a lawn care company that mowed the lawn there. Edwards said he placed Evans with the two others, Moore & Groom, in Sumpter Township. He said he saw Moore & Evans together at Evans’ home nearby. Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Victoria Shackleford used the phrase “robbery gone bad.” Attorneys for the defendants focused on Covington’s ex-boyfriend & said he was violent. The defense for one of the men also raised the possibility that Sumpter Township police took a cell phone into evidence at the murder scene & deleted everything on it. The evidence tech from Sumpter said he couldn’t say what happened to the phone once he bagged it for evidence. The hearing is expected to continue on Tuesday, 3/23/21.

if mistaken identity is indeed what it is.. it reminds me of another case ..and I think it was a male who was killed brutally I think with a baseball bat in a mistaken identity that is drugs revenge related.. what a waste of life for nothing

Plead not guilty. Held without bond.
