Cleveland Police will spend the "next few days" scouring Saltburn Bank for clues over what happened to Steven Clark, a force spokeswoman said.

A police spokeswoman said officers would be looking through undergrowth from the bottom of the Valley Gardens to the top of a walkway near to the Spa Hotel, which is on a steep edge of the bank.

The search site in Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a short drive of about two and a half miles from Mr Clark's home town.

Det Ch Insp Shaun Page said the searches are a line of inquiry by the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Cold Case Review Team, and they are using modern-day forensic techniques.

He said: "The investigation into Steven's disappearance still continues, with the latest searches of the area around Saltburn Bank.

"We will be in the area throughout this week and would like to thank the public for their patience as the searches take place.

The search area is in the hinterland near the seafront where Doris Clark last saw her son. Skelton Beck is a stream that discharges in the sea at Saltburn.

Google Streetview does not go as far as the Valley Gardens unfortunately.

Interesting, must be based on some form of "intelligence". They wouldnt just randomly search an area after all this time IMO.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I wonder what they are looking for ,I am not sure whether it is a place where he could be buried.

Police investigating the suspected murder of a disabled man who disappeared in 1992 in Cleveland have begun to search a steep bank close to where he vanished.

Steven Clark went missing in December 1992 while out on a walk with his mother.

It is said he went into a public toilet in Saltburn and after Mrs Clark waited for him to emerge she went back to the family home in Markse, Cleveland.

They never saw him again and no body has ever been found.

This is confusing. "a steep bank close to where he vanished"

There was a sighting of him near his home on the day he vanished after he had gone missing from the public toilets.
An area near the house of the family was searched in a similar way.
I wondered about the "intelligence" at the time. Whatever it was, it appeared to be concentrated around his home and it was sufficient to arrest the parents.

If the sighting near his home is correct, then Saltburn Banks would not be near where he vanished. Saltburn Banks is near where his mother says he vanished.

Perhaps LE found another anonymous letter?

If you look on the map and see the Spa Hotel, you’ll see a foopath coming from the bank up to its carpark. I think the area they are searching is between the footpath in the valley gardens and the properties on the bank. It is also accessible from the road via the hotel carpark. It’s a very steep wooded area which is completely overgrown and as far as I know there are no official paths through that bit of land.
It’s very close to the prom where the public toilets are.

Any idea what the blue markers are on the top photo?

I presume they mark the positions of potential evidence that has been bagged and taken away. I can't see numbers or any identifiers that would allow them to be tied to serial numbers on the bags, though. Perhaps the positions have been recorded using co-ordinates from some fixed datums, but where these might be isn't obvious.
