Gary Akers, a husband and father, was an employee at the Chrysler plant in Fenton when he disappeared without a trace leaving behind his five small children on December 11, 1988.

He left home at 11:30 p.m. to borrow a chainsaw from a neighbor so he could cut wood for his family's wood stove. At midnight, he bought a six-pack of beer at Mom's Hilltop Tavern in Grubville, Missouri. He never returned home and has never been heard from again.

SHORTLY AFTER HIS DISAPPEARANCE, THE HOME NEXT TO HIS BURNED AND RELATIVES STARTED RECEIVING STRANGE PHONE CALLS. IN MOST CASES, THE FAMILY SAID, THE CALLER DIDN’T SPEAK BUT THERE WAS A CALL TO A SISTER THAT HAD A THREAT.

"We got a phone call that said, ‘If you don't quit looking, you're going to be next," said Faye Thayer.

At 8:00 a.m. on December 12, Akers's wife of eleven years found his black Jeep abandoned just off Route FF at the entrance to the subdivision where they lived with their four children. Four cans of beer were inside the vehicle, and the keys were hidden above the sun visor. A search of the area turned up no signs of violence and no indication of Akers's whereabouts.

John Akers said his brother was employed at a Chrysler plant in Fenton. He was 31 when he went missing.

Just before his disappearance, Gary and his wife had been shopping when he left to gather wood for their wood furnace.

Gary then stopped at Moms Hilltop Tavern in Grubville for a six-pack, and was never seen nor heard from since, John said.

“We’re looking for answers and we’ve offered a reward for information that leads to closure,” Shelba added.

The family has increased the $5,000 reward previously offered to $15,000. The information must lead to either Gary, or his remains.

“We don’t believe he’s alive at this time,” John said, “but we think there is somebody who knows what happened.”

The areas south of Fenton, including Cedar Hill, Richwoods and Lonedell were known for drug activity, primarily marijuana, Shelba Akers said.

She described Gary as a “free spirit” who was associated with people involved with drugs.
“There was a group of people in Lonedell who we believe are responsible,” said John. “Some of them are in the St. Clair area still.”

The Akerses said their renewed interest in the disappearance was sparked by a phone call from NamUs (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System) representatives.

Franklin County Detective Chuck Subke said he was contacted by NamUs because Gary Akers was not in the system. He put NamUs representatives in contact with the Akers.

“There are no leads and we’re not actively working the case,” said Subke.

He added that there are no plans to reopen the case unless new evidence or a witness comes forward.
“It is a cold case and probably will stay cold unless somebody decides their conscience is bothering them,” Subke said.

Shelba added that information would bring some closure to the family, including Gary and John’s 82-year-old mother.

“She can’t let it go,” she said.

The family said they still hold onto the hope that they’ll find answers.
“With prayers and hope, and everyone pulling together, hopefully we can get some results,” Shelba said
