WA WA - Sofia Juarez, 5, Kennewick, 3 Feb 2003

Details of disappearance updated, 5/5/21:

Sofia Lucerno Juarez – The Charley Project
"
In 2021, investigators said a "highly credible" witness saw a girl matching Sofia's description walking down the sidewalk on south Washington Street near east 15th Avenue between 8:00 and 9:15 the day she disappeared. The witness stated a person led the little girl away as she cried. Authorities have a detailed description of this person but have not released it to the public. An occupied van was stopped on a nearby side street; it was a light blue, silver or gray late 1970s or early 1980s full-sized panel van with no side windows. It appeared to be a work-type van of the type used by painters or contractors."

The Vanished Podcast covered Sofia's story today and included an update on the TikTok lead as well as interviews with investigators: EPISODE 301: Sofia Juarez — The Vanished Podcast

I just listened to the episode, the investigator eleborated on the statement of the witness who may have witnessed Sofia's abduction. The police regard the witness account as credible as she were able to provide an very accurate description of Sofia's clothing, including details that had not been released to the public.

The witness observed Sofia walking on the sidewalk Washington St, when she was approached by a young Hispanic male, of which the witness estimated as being between the ages of 11-14, he began to guide her towards a waiting van. As he was doing this, Sofia was crying and the boy was laughing. The van was parked on East 14 St. It was stopped in the road way, with its headlights and turn signal on.

***************
According to DNA evidence, the woman shown in a viral TikTok video last year was not Sofia Juarez, the small girl who went missing from her Tri-Cities family in 2003. According to the most current Kennewick Police Department update, DNA samples were received from the woman who resembled Sofia in a viral video released in the spring of 2021. On March 2, 2022, KPD investigators concluded that the sample was not a match following a lengthy effort to find and collaborate with the subject of this TikTok. KPD investigators attempted to reach the issue for several months after the TikTok video went viral last April. The woman’s alleged family members denied she was Sofia, but investigators wanted to make sure.

*This article spells her name wrong but it’s her.

The disappearance of Sophia Juarez is one of the most high profile unsolved cases in Tri-Cities. She was taken one day before her 5th birthday near her Kennewick home. Sophia's case garnered national attention. A witness that Kennewick Police deemed credible came forward with information in 2021 that indicated they may have witnessed Sophia's abduction.

The witness claimed they saw a young man (pre-teen to teen) approach Sophia and lead her to a waiting van that then left the area. In February 2021, a Tiktok video featured a young woman in Mexico that some believed may have been Sophia. After investigation by KPD, and the result of DNA testing, the woman in the video was not Sophia Juarez. Sophia's whereabouts are unknown to this day and her disappearance remains unsolved as KPD continues to follow leads.

KPD has a page dedicated to updates on Sophia's case that you can follow by clicking here.

Kennewick Police said she was following a family member to the store in 2003, a day before her fifth birthday on Feb. 5. That was the last anyone saw Sofia.

There have been rewards, time-aged photos of what she would look like and semitruck trailers featuring Sofia’s pictures.

The police department says that Sofia’s mom died without knowing what happened to her daughter.

They describe Sofia as a “typical young girl who enjoyed cartoons, playing with Barbie dolls and coloring.”

Police are still working on the case, hoping to bring her home.

They have dedicated a page to her, hoping to get tips from anyone who might know the whereabouts of Sofia Juarez.
