Canada - Coronavirus COVID-19 #2

Many Canadian universities plan to resume in-person classes in the Fall of 2021. Some universities require vaccinations for students living in residence, some don't.

Students I've spoken to are eager to attend in-person classes and are not too worried about pandemic. Faculty are more worried, particularly tenured profs who are over 50.

This is a wild assertion, but one that is getting more traction today

"A Chinese virologist who was among the first people to suggest that coronavirus leaked from a lab has accused Anthony Fauci and top scientists of covering the leak up.

Dr Li-Meng Jan claims coronavirus is a bioweapon and accuses Dr. Anthony Fauci of being among scientists and organizations who knew about it and tried to hide it.

There are growing calls across the world for claims that coronavirus accidentally leaked from the lab in Wuhan to be taken seriously after US intelligence agencies launched an investigation.

A growing number of experts believe that China was conducting gain of function research on coronavirus, which genetically enhances viruses so that scientists can develop vaccines, and an accident resulted in its release into the world."

"The Alberta government has asked the province's four comprehensive academic and research universities to pause any new partnerships with links to the Chinese government and to review its existing relationships.

Alberta's minister of advanced education, Demetrios Nicolaides, sent a letter to the University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge and Athabasca University calling for them to "pause the pursuit of any new or renewed partnerships with [People's Republic of China/Chinese Communist Party]-linked entities, undertake a thorough review of their institution's relationships with entities potentially linked to the PRC/CCP, and ensure these ongoing partnerships follow stringent risk assessments and due diligence," spokesperson Taylor Hides said of the letter.

The institutions have 90 days to submit a report with the requested information to the government.

Race between vaccines and variants is back on as B.1.617 takes hold in Canada

"But Bogoch hasn't lost hope that the pace of our vaccine rollout and the protection the shots provide could avert potential disaster — even if research shows one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines are only about 30 per cent effective against it.

New data from Public Health England is also discouraging, finding that two doses are more effective than one against B.1.617 and that not only is it more transmissible but it also appears to cause more significant illness as well.

"All this tells me is that we need to really work on getting second doses out faster, especially among vulnerable populations," he said.

"But if this is a race between the variants and the vaccine — the vaccine is going to win this round in Canada.""

Sounds good.

Ontario's daily COVID-19 case count dips below 600 for first time in 8 months

"Ontario's daily COVID-19 case count has dropped to its lowest level since late September as the number of patients in intensive care dipped below 500 for the first time in two months.
The province reported 525 new cases of COVID-19 today marking the first time in eight months that the daily case count has dropped below 600 in the province. It is also the lowest single-day total logged in Ontario since Sept. 27."

More information is trickling in about covid as a manufactured virus.

I'm curious what sort of global response is appropriate if it is proven that China unleashed this virus on the world, by intent or by accident, knowing full well the implications and said nothing. Of most concern is the fact that China may have known exactly what would happen globally, yet did not stop all travel out of China in early days.

The rest of the world was sitting around, posturing with political correctness, and claiming that virus transmission could be prevented by politely asking international visitors whether they might be sick. Idiotic scientists were claiming that people from China had special genes or blood type that caused them to get sick, that non-Asians were immune.

If China had the answers early on and said nothing, that's serious. If they provided answers and the global community arrogantly believed they could manage what China could not, that's different.

"Much of the public discussion has focused on circumstantial evidence: mysterious illnesses in late 2019; the lab’s work intentionally supercharging viruses to increase lethality (known as “gain of function” research). The Chinese Communist Party has been reluctant to release relevant information. Reports based on U.S. intelligence have suggested the lab collaborated on projects with the Chinese military.

But the most compelling reason to favor the lab leak hypothesis is firmly based in science. In particular, consider the genetic fingerprint of CoV-2, the novel coronavirus responsible for the disease Covid-19.

In gain-of-function research, a microbiologist can increase the lethality of a coronavirus enormously by splicing a special sequence into its genome at a prime location. Doing this leaves no trace of manipulation. But it alters the virus spike protein, rendering it easier for the virus to inject genetic material into the victim cell. Since 1992 there have been at least 11 separate experiments adding a special sequence to the same location. The end result has always been supercharged viruses."
