Hungarian extradition hearing adjourned for man accused of murder in Hamilton

A court in Hungary has adjourned the extradition hearing for accused murderer Oliver Karafa in order to gather more information on his case from Canadian authorities.

“He’ll do whatever it takes to avoid being sent back to Canada,” one source said. “Karafa’s lawyers are throwing up a lot of smoke about the dangers he faces if he’s returned to Canada but … there’s not a lot of evidence for that argument.”

“There was a court hearing in September at which Oliver’s local counsel raised various concerns about his safety if transferred to Canada,” a source told The Toronto Sun. “They also raised some concerns about corruption in the Hamilton police force on the basis of some articles that had been published earlier.”

UPDATE: Oliver Karafa extradition case delayed again in Budapest

Just hours after issuing a notice that Oliver Karafa’s extradition case was to resume in Hungary on Monday, the Budapest Metropolitan Court says it’s once again being postponed — this time due to COVID-19.

“Due to a situation that has occurred regarding the COVID-19 pandemic just now, the Monday court hearing was postponed,” the court said in a message to the Spectator Friday morning (around 3 p.m. Budapest time).

Oliver Karafa back in Canada to face Hamilton murder charge

It took some time for Hamilton police to co-ordinate Karafa’s extradition. Hamilton police officers travelled to Hungary to take him into their custody and accompany him back to jail here.

Hamilton police confirmed detectives escorted Karafa back to Hamilton on Wednesday, March 30.​
