1 Teen Dead, Another Critically Injured in California Theater Shooting During ‘Forever Purge’ Screening

An 18-year-old woman was killed and a 19-year-old man was critically injured after a shooting at The Regal Edwards Corona Crossings RPX theater on Monday night during a screening of the new movie "Forever Purge".

The Forever Purge is the fifth film in the dystopian Purge franchise. A focus across the installments is a national holiday known as The Purge, a day in which all crime, including murder, becomes legal for a 12-hour period.

Police were called for service at 11:45 p.m. at The Crossings, located at 2650 Tuscany Street, for an unknown problem. Upon arrival, officers located a man and woman who had both suffered gunshot wounds. The 19-year-old man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 18-year-old female died from her injuries at the scene. The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of relatives.

An 18-year-old woman was killed and a 19-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a Corona movie theater, police said Tuesday.



“During the actual movie time, no one apparently heard the gunshot,” Kailyn Dillon, an employee who was not working at the time, said. “I know that we do have security bag checks that we do on the daily and, unfortunately, I’m not sure if just was missed or if it was in a holster on their belt.”

Authorities said employees found the two while cleaning the theater following the 9:30 p.m. showing of “The Forever Purge,” at the Regal Edwards Corona Crossings movie theater.

“At some point, the employee or employees walk inside the theater to conduct their clean-up or walk through and that’s when the 911 call was placed,” Corona Police Department Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis said. “[They said] that there was an unknown problem, somebody was bleeding, there wasn’t very specific information given.”

Kouroubacalis said police did not know what the call was for until officers arrived on the scene and found the two teens suffering from gunshot wounds, though authorities said no weapon was found at the scene.

The man, identified as Anthony Barajas, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The woman, identified as Rylee Goodrich, was pronounced dead at the scene.



Barajas was a popular TikTok personality with more than 1 million followers, and Goodrich was home on summer break from Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

Corona Police Department detectives and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau – Forensic Services personnel have completed the crime scene process in the movie theater at The Crossings Shopping Center, located at 2650 Tuscany Street.

During the investigation and crime scene processing, detectives recovered items of evidentiary value; however, they did not locate a firearm inside the theater.

The female victim, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene, has been identified as Rylee Goodrich, 18-years-old from Corona, CA. The male victim who was transported to a local hospital is on life support and has been identified as Anthony Barajas, 19-years-old from Corona, CA. Both victims were inside a theater watching the 9:35 p.m. showing of The Forever Purge. The victims attended the showing together.

Detectives are conducting follow up on all investigative leads with hopes of identifying the person(s) responsible for this heinous crime.

Looks like the movie they went to see was violent and involved gunfire. I suppose the killer shot them during a loud scene with gunshots and that's how he/she escaped without anyone else in the theater noticing? The cousin in her interview states there were only 6 people in the theater (not clear if that was including the 2 victims or not) so that would make it easier to slip in & out unnoticed. The victims probably never even saw it coming.

The male victim AB had over a million TikTok followers. I'm guessing the murder had something to do with TikTok -- perhaps an unstable viewer/"friend" who was somehow enraged by AB's videos. The female victim was probably collateral damage.

Yeah, it could be random:

1) a road rage incident where the angry perp follows the pair to the movie theater and buys a ticket to the same film and kills them once inside, then stays for the remainder of the film to avoid suspicion (cameras would show someone leaving the film early, I assume).
2) someone already in the theater who was triggered by the pair. Maybe the pair was talking or giggling throughout the film, and the killer became so annoyed that he/she grabbed his/her gun and shot. Stranger things have happened.

Whatever the case, it's a very bold move to kill someone in a movie theater. I can't believe no one noticed as they were leaving that there were two gunshot victims slumped in their seats. It's weird.

My gut still tells me it's linked to AB's TikTok but I'm not ruling out random killing either. So far we don't have any info to go on... Wonder if AB and RG were involved romantically and there was a jealous third party?

The Forever Purge, which is the fifth installment in the successful Purge franchise, follows a migrant couple and the wealthy ranchers they work for in a dystopian version of the United States in the year 2048 in which the government allows all crime for a 12-hour period - including murder.

Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis told the Press Enterprise that he did not know if cops would be investigating whether the movie's theme could be related to the shooting.

The relationship between the two teens was not immediately clear, and it was also not known if the teens were shot at by a third person or if the shooting was an attempted-murder suicide.

Dunno if it's relevant, but according to AB's 7/14/21 TikTok, he is single, so I don't think he and Rylee were in a serious romantic relationship. Edited to add: he was in a relationship with someone (not Rylee) back in April. Just trying to figure out if it could be a jealous love interest or what...

Also appears he recently returned from a family vacation in Hawaii.

Rylee's cousin states Rylee was shot in the back of the head (per video link above). I'm guessing Anthony was too. Killer was probably sitting behind them.

I think "nothing indicates a suspect" on camera because the perp didn't shoot and run, they walked out just like everyone else in the theater.
There are 18 screens in there, so alot more people than the 6 at the horror film. All movies were stopped and everyone was told to leave quickly.
If they paid in cash they will be harder to trace and also maybe a covid mask.
For many years all the theaters in CA I've been to have cams at entrance, in the lobby, and in the theater pointing right at you, of course we know sometimes they aren't on.
Minus the 2 victims, there's only 4 people to track.
Hopefully, they can follow the 4 people's exit by what they are wearing and maybe the cams in the parking caught the car tag numbers.
Unless the perp (or perps) walked away.

"They told us to leave. There was an emergency, just leave fast," Castro said, according to Los Angeles's KNBC-TV. "It's pretty scary, the fact we didn't know nothing was going on. Just scary."

On Tuesday detectives at the 18-screen movie house completed their search of the theater in which the victims were discovered without finding a gun, Capt. Paul Mercado said. At the same time, Kouroubacalis said, there was no evidence, either from witnesses or surveillance video, showing that someone shot the victims and fled.

The theater sold six tickets for that showing, Kouroubacalis said, and police were trying to find the other customers.

So if there are 18 screens in the complex, someone could feasibly have walked out of any of them and into where the victims were.

Do we know where they were sitting? If near to rear or exit, it would make task probably easier.

Are we thinking that the victims were targeted, or it was some random in connection with the film's subject matter of following 'a group of people who attempt to escape from the United States after an insurrectionist movement continues committing crimes and murders nationwide after the Purge's ending'?
