Bond Set at $20 Million for MIT Student Suspected in Killing of Yale Student

“This court is extremely troubled by the efforts this defendant has made to avoid apprehension and to potentially flee this country,” said New Haven Superior Court Judge, Brian Fischer.

According to prosecutors, Pan’s family owns two homes in Massachusetts and recently bid on a North Carolina home.

*Qinxuan Pan’s case was just continued until July 13, when attorneys will discuss a potential probable cause hearing and the possibility of reducing his bond.
*Attorney William Gerace, representing Pan, sought for Pan to be provided eyeglasses, as his were taken when he was arrested and he cannot read without them, and access to a phone. Both requests were granted.
*Pan’s parents, Hong Huang and Hao Pan, were standing outside the courtroom as proceedings wrapped up. Asked for their thoughts at this moment, they expressed sorrow. “It is sorry this happened,” said Huang. “Only one word (appropriately describes it) - sad.”
*Gerace said after the proceedings he believed a $1 million bond was appropriate. The current amount, $20 million, is “tantamount to no bond at all,”
*Gerace also mentioned the sadness of Pan’s parents. “He was basically their whole life,” he said, noting that Pan is an only child
*Gerace, noting that discovery in the case is still ongoing, said he had not discussed with Pan whether he was innocent. Pan is generally in good spirits, he said, and being treated well while incarcerated

This was a very wild ride as a local. I’ve never seen a bond so high out here either that I can recall. The largest I’ve seen recently was $5M (for a man of little means) and then the $6M in the dulos case. I find it hard to believe that his bond amount will be lowered to a point that he will be able to bond out—authorities just spent months tracking him across the country.

wondering about a previous post here that had said QP was seen near Atlanta ? With family ... interesting though I haven’t found who in the family he was with. Either way, glad QP has been caught.

Found more details about the parents' connection in this case, according to this report in June. All thanks to licence plate readers.

Cellphone data, surveillance cameras helped detectives zero in on Yale grad student Kevin Jiang’s killer; Qinxuan Pan was friends with Jiang’s fiancée at MIT

A phone that had belonged to Pan had been located at a gas station in rural North Carolina not far from I-95, but he was nowhere to be found, and license plate readers captured a Lexus previously linked to Pan’s mother crossing the Verrazano Bridge in New York just after 3:30 a.m. the morning after Jiang’s murder, detectives detailed in the warrant affidavit.

A search on license plate reader history revealed that the same Lexus had been in New Haven twice before, first late one night in September 2020 and again the night of Nov. 17, 2020, just 1,000 feet from Perry’s home, court records reveal.

Later that week, five days after the murder, U.S. Marshals received several alerts that the Lexus had been seen in Duluth, Georgia, near Atlanta, court records show. Agents were able to find and stop the car and found only Pan’s parents, Hong Huang and Hao Pan, inside.

False passport and $19K in cash prompted $20 million bond for Yale slaying suspect, judge says

Fischer said in the document he submitted to the high court that Pan was arrested in an apartment he was renting in Montgomery under the false name “Henry Choi.” At the time, he was in possession of $19,000 in cash, seven cellphones, seven SIM cards and his father’s passport, Fischer wrote.

Pan was born in Shanghai, China, Fischer noted, and has ties to the area.

ETA: "Choi" is not a mainland Chinese name AFAIK. It sounds more like Korean, or Hong Kong Chinese.

Judge upholds $20 million bond for MIT researcher accused of killing Yale grad student Kevin Jiang after Supreme Court orders review. Jiang was shot 5 times in ‘extremely brutal’ murder.

Detectives also began to investigate Pan’s parents after learning they apparently helped their son leave Connecticut the morning after the murder, driving with him down the East Coast and sharing little to no information with authorities when they were contacted, Miranda said. They paid cash for hotels, laptops and prepaid phones and even used other people’s cell phones along the way, she added

U.S. Treasury financial crimes investigators also alerted prosecutors that their teams have repeatedly flagged wire transfers from China of “very large amounts of money” to accounts in Pan and his parents’ names from 2014 to 2020, Miranda revealed Wednesday.

Qinxuan Pan retains controversial New Haven-based defense attorney Norm Pattis

During Tuesday’s court appearance, Pattis said he had received evidence related to the case from the state’s attorney’s office earlier that day and would need a few weeks to review the items, according to the Independent. Harmon granted Pattis permission to share the evidence with Pan through the library at the Cheshire Correctional Institution. The case was continued to Oct. 29, when the date for a probable cause hearing will potentially be scheduled.

OMG!!!

Well, this is an interesting case…It will fill my trial calendar after I’m done with Brophy, the writer of “How to kill a husband”, who, yes, killed her husband.

Do we have a motive? A crush, maybe?
All about the girl, imo, speculation.
Yale murder mystery 'person of interest' attended MIT with victim's fiancée, but connection unknown | Fox News
''He had just proposed to his fiancée, Zion Perry, on Jan. 30 -- exactly one year after the two met on a church retreat. A week later, he was shot dead. New Haven police responded to multiple 911 calls about gunshots at about 8:30 p.m on Feb. 6 in the East Rock neighborhood.''
