The mother of Dante Mullinix, the 2-year-old boy who police said died of traumatic brain injuries accompanied by strangulation and suffocation, in mid-September, is expected to appear in court Thursday for her Preliminary Hearing.

Leah Mullinix has been charged with endangering the welfare of children. The single felony count stems from an incident from September 6. Dante Mullinix died 8 days later.

On September 20, criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children charges were charged against 39-year-old Tyree Bowie in connection with Dante’s death. Police received a report from York Hospital staff around 10:30 p.m. on September 6 that a man, later identified as Bowie, dropped the unresponsive child off at the hospital. Bowie left the hospital.

A police criminal complaint and affidavit accuses Leah Mullinix of neglecting injuries on Dante from August 31st. Mullinix had taken Dante to the hospital for swells and ulcers on his private parts. Doctors informed Mullinix that the swells would be painful and that Dante would need medication. Mullinx did not fill the prescription for 2 days when York Couty CYS forced her to.

uhm "Mullinx did not fill the prescription for 2 days when York Couty CYS forced her to." WHAT?!?!?!
So this didn't raise any flags? really? They couldn't follow up on the poor baby? How does a 2 year old get ulcers in his private parts? It must have been such an agonizing week for the baby. Seriously?!?!?!?!?

Dante Angel Mullinix was born at 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2015, at Gettysburg Hospital.

For the most part, Dante was a happy baby, said his aunt, Sarah Mullinix, of Straban Township, Adams County. But later on, he seemed to lack skills that other children had at the same age.

He was nonverbal — he could say only a few words including “ew” and “yeah” — and would bang his head when he got upset. He had problems chewing and swallowing food. And he was behind on learning how to walk.

There was a suspicion, she said, that he might’ve had autism. Dante received early intervention services for a time but was never formally diagnosed with the disorder.

She called him “Monkey Man.” That’s because he had a blanket with a picture of a monkey on it, which he’d rub against his face before going to sleep.
...
Dante had several contacts with the child welfare system and law enforcement in Pennsylvania — but the details of those interactions remain unclear.

In May 2017, Adams County Children & Youth Services conducted an assessment and provided in-home services until October 2017, said Colin Day, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, in an email.

Child and youth services, he said, conducted another assessment in March 2018.

Leah said the agency helped her get cash assistance, a driver's license and a car.

That summer, the sisters had a falling out.

Sarah told her sister that she had 30 days to find somewhere else to live. Instead, Leah took Dante and immediately left.

They ended up in York. She had friends who lived there.

One day, Leah was getting her hair done at someone's home. That’s when she met Hector Rivera.
...
Leah, she alleged in court documents, was mentally and financially unstable and verbally and physically abusive toward her son.

“He is not getting the care that he needs,” the complaint stated.

But Leah disputes accusations that she was abusive.

"I didn’t do anything to harm my son," she said. "I love my son."

Before his murder in York, 2-year-old Dante Mullinix had a tragic life

It was herpes. This baby was being abused well before he was murdered.

Is the Pa. law that police used to charge a woman for Facebook posts constitutional?

Whether this jury got it right or got it wrong, it feels like the deck was stacked against Dante from the moment he drew breath. Nobody did right by this kid.

I'm so sorry, kiddo. You deserved so much better from everyone in your life. You deserved a life of your own, and all the justice in the world won't bring you back and give you the chance to live it. That's the bitter truth. Justice, whatever that means, is for the living.

Sleep well, Dante.

Leah Mullinix, the mother of 2-year-old Dante Mullinix, who died in 2018 from a traumatic brain injury, pled guilty to one count of child endangerment on Wednesday.

According to the York County Court of Common Pleas. Mullinix will be sentenced on April 20, 2023.

Leah Mullinix won’t go to jail for the admitted neglect of her 2-year-old son, Dante, in the days leading up to his death five years ago, but she also won’t be allowed around children alone either.

The 26-year-old was sentenced Monday, about 10 months after she pleaded guiltyto a felony count of endangering the welfare of a child. The nearly one-year gap between plea and sentence followed apparently lengthy psychiatric and substance abuse treatment.
