It's not just that Thoresen was bonded out time and again. He was able to avoid extradition for bombings in Arizona, was paroled early for a most serious assault in California and was not sentenced to do time in an equally serious Las Vegas assault case.
I can't remember how he avoided jail for assaulting a waiter in yet another case in AZ. If he only killed half of the people I have him down for, given these things, revelation of his story would have been an outrage and would have had serious consequences for many in the justice system.
But, because he was dead, they just swept it under the rug (though this was no small task. They staged his wife's trial and published a book that glosses over his story.) That said, those in the justice system have continued to cover it up, in some cases by firing people and in others by keeping documents sealed with obvious excuses for doing so. They also lie about DNA, not just in the Zodiac case but in Illinois.
