Canada - Coronavirus COVID-19 #3

The mob mentality that we see related to covid, with gangs of angry people pushing their views on others, is so un-Canadian. What happened to the laid back Canadian values? Who are these crazy angry aggressive people?

I don't know who they are. I don't know anyone like them. It's disturbing.

I don't know who they are. I don't know anyone like them. It's disturbing.

I met a woman at a dog park recently who talked endlessly about invermectin and hydroxychloroquine. She was promoting a webinar series with 9 episodes about covid as a hoax. Telling her that everyone has to choose for themselves regarding covid did not slow her down. She started listing the names of the episode presenters.

That's the problem with strong opinions about covid. It's like strong opinions about religion. No one wants strangers to tell them what to believe about controversial topics. The sooner covid anti-vaxxers respect the rights of others, the easier this pandemic will be for everyone.

The Alberta Premier seems too proud to ask Ottawa for help, but perhaps it's time for him to be humble for the sake of Albertans.

"With Alberta's health-care system "collapsing right in front of our eyes," the leaders of four unions representing thousands of health-care workers are calling on Premier Jason Kenney to ask for help from the military and Red Cross.

"There are no more nurses in our province who can be deployed. There are no more paramedics. There are no more respiratory therapists. There are no more support staff," states the Sept. 18 letter to Kenney, which implores him to make a formal request for help from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"The tank is empty. The well is dry."

If restaurants can return to normal business by putting a sign on the window that says "immunization records will be verified," they will. They need the business. I doubt any business will choose to reduce to 1/3 capacity for the sake of anti-vaxxers.

What? Langdon, Alberta people are threatening other communities?

"A bar just east of Calgary says it will be closing after it received an “overwhelming” number of threats that came its way after it said it would be opting into Alberta’s vaccine passport program.

The Langdon Firehouse Bar and Grill writes on Facebook that it has been flooded with angry comments and messages since it announced people would have to prove they’ve been vaccinated or share a negative COVID-19 test before entering the bar.
...

The restaurant says all through the pandemic, it stayed in line with Alberta’s COVID-19 restrictions, closing when needed, making sure patrons were masked, and keeping parties socially distanced when they were dining in."
This business has chosen to socially distance at 1/3 capacity.

It's almost like a two tiered society is emerging before our eyes and we can't see it. Immunization Records are the passport to access all businesses. Seems sci fi.

If it could be standard practice across all industries, then people would gradually become accustomed to being asked for their vaccine passport. They see others going through the same process and it can become mostly normalized. I wish the business could have stayed open and stuck it out. These are hard times for this type of business. Hopefully the majority of people will continue to support those that require vaccination passports.

So ... that was an election. I'd say it was a complete waste of time, effort and money, but it I was happy to see that the handling of the covid crisis did not become a huge election issue. It seems apparent that people were relatively satisfied with the status quo.

It will be interesting to watch Alberta recover from this current disaster.

Online forums seem to be the breeding ground for misinformation about covid in Alberta.

"Misinformation flooding some of Alberta's biggest online communities has become a major problem during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to three volunteer Reddit moderators in Edmonton.

... the moderators said the number of posts pushing misinformation and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 has surged in their communities on Reddit ... The moderators say the vast majority of these posts come from users who have never participated in their online communities before.

Thousands of Albertans rely on their local Reddit communities, but volunteer moderators say keeping these places free of pandemic-related misinformation and disinformation — misinformation that is intentionally spread — has become increasingly difficult and time-consuming. ...

A fellow r/Alberta moderator, who is an Edmonton student in his 20s, said death threats have become common in the team's inbox and the authors of misinformation posts often urge moderators to kill themselves. ...

Last month, moderators of r/Alberta and dozens of other subreddits around the world protested "rampant COVID-19 misinformation" on Reddit and asked the American company to take responsibility for it.

Following the online protests, the company banned one subreddit, quarantined 54 others and added a reporting feature for moderators to flag community interference."

Sick children are paying the price for covid positive adults who did not get vaccinated.

"Alberta Children's Hospital has reduced surgeries by 75 per cent to manage the strain of sick COVID-19 patients — something a Calgary father says is "terrifying."

Jeff Germaine's 10-year-old son Loic is going through treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, as staff from the Alberta Children's Hospital are being redeployed across the city, and surgeries are being scaled back. ...

Alberta Health Services says the only surgeries happening in the province are those that must be done within a three-day window.

How bizarre. What sort of crazy man thinks that he has the right to interfere with his wife's choices? He seems to believe that his wife needs permission to access health care.

This man needs to be found, and his wife needs to be offered assistance to assert her rights without consequence.
