A woman was walking on a trail early Sunday evening in a remote, wooded part of Chautauqua County when she thought she saw something like a glass bottle.

It turned out to be a human skull.

The next day, as forensic anthropologists were excavating the rest of the skeleton, sheriff's deputies searching the area made another grisy discovery: a decomposed body.

The skeletal remains may have been there for decades, Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone said Tuesday. "The second one was likely within the year."

A skull was found off a trail. The next day, searchers discovered a second body.

Missing from St Marys, PA - possibly in Buffalo, NY area.

Anecdotal info (from phone call with LE years ago): "Pharmaceuticals" (his word, not mine) may have been a factor in her disappearance.

Sheriff Jim Quattrone says he believes the remains are “several decades old”, admitting on Tuesday they broadly appear to fit the time frame of Laemmerhirt’s disappearance. [snip] Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat, ... says...[snip] “We’ll look at the bones. We’ll look at the condition of the bones and the soft tissue,” Dirkmaat said. “That will further solidify our estimate of the post-mortem interval. And then the other thing is – how much of the body do we have and what does it tell us about the biological profile? The age, sex, stature, ancestry. Things like that.”

Officials Awaiting Forensic Results On Remains

Fifteen years ago, a familiar scenario was taking place. In September 2006, the body of a woman was found by hunters on remote state game lands in the town of Charlotte.

That discovery sparked a four-day search of the immediate area that included a forensic investigation team, the FBI and several police agencies that ultimately led to the identification of Yolanda Bindics, who had been missing for two years.

Today, Chautauqua County officials are awaiting results from forensic experts after skeletal remains believed to be from two women were found this week in the town of Portland.

With regards to the missing women in the area. I read somewhere that they believe L.C.B. was killed and cremated by her then husband.

That leaves the woman missing from the 70s (PL) and the woman from 2007. It's very obvious that the husband's of both of these women are suspects.

They are implying that these remains were placed there at different times - decades apart. Which is very odd. It's either an unbelievable coincidence, or maybe.....

Someone discovered the older remains, while hunting, hiking, or scouting for a spot to dispose of a body, of someone they planned on getting rid of. They may have thought disposing of a body near another one would confuse the investigators.

I can't even begin to calculate the odds of this happening, but they ended up together somehow.

In just read that the police are back out there searching a larger area.

This could be just an example of them being thorough. It could also suggest they learned something from the remains they found that might suggest that there are more out there. For example if they identified one if the bodies, and that person disappeared with someone else.

I hope they are being careful and searching the entire trail system (adjacent areas to the trails that is). Its an amazing coincidence to find two bodies in such a small rural area. There has to be a connection.

I have hiked along there. That part of the rails to trails system has 10 geocaches on it. I am shocked nobody has come across those remains prior to this.
