Missing Temple Couple's Car Found In Austin

The car of a missing couple from Temple was found in Austin this weekend, prompting the local force to assist in the investigation toward finding the individuals involved.

UPDATE: Bodies of missing Central Texas man, woman found

Authorities recovered two bodies Tuesday in rural Okfusee County, Okla., in the search for a missing Temple man and woman, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation confirmed.

Monday, July 19th:
*Docket Hearing (@ am CT) – TX – Michael Lee Swearingin (32) & Jenna Kay Scott (28) (Jan. 4, 2019, Temple; found in Clearview, OK 1/9/19) – for *Maya Renee Maxwell (26/now 28) (Mark’s GF) arrested (1/11/19) & extradited from MI to TX (1/16/19), charged (1/16/19), indicted (4/3/19) & arraigned (4/26/19) with capital murder of multiple persons & 3rd degree tampering or fabricating physical evidence. $750K bond. Bond reduction denied (8/18/20).
Maxwell admitted in an arrest affidavit she took Swearingin’s car and drove it to Austin to hide it, was in the house with Marks when he reportedly killed Swearingin and Scott, drove with him to Oklahoma and was there when the bodies were buried.
Trial was set to begin on 3/1/21 continued to 11/15/21.

During the same hearing, attorneys for Maxwell asked the judge to reduce her bond, but he denied the request. 6/3/21: Docket: Returned State subpoena to Det. Ashley Flores. 6/4/21 Update: status hearing was cancelled. Docket: SH Special hearing. Order: Ex-parte. 6/15/21: Write of Habeas Corpus seeking bail reduction served 5/26/21.

DA will seek DP. Bond reduction denied (3/30/21).
*Charged (2/4/19), indicted (4/3/19) & arraigned (4/10/19) with interfering w/emergency call, false report to police officer violating protective order, burglary habitation intend.
*Charged & indicted (3/13/19) & arraigned (4/26/19) with 1st degree felony burglary (on 8/21/18 at Scott’s home). $16,500 bond on charges of interference with an emergency call, making a false police report & violation of a protection order, bond for the burglary charge is $250K, the murder of multiple persons is carrying a bond of $1.5 million & $250K. Plead not guilty to all charges.
Trial was to start on 6/24/19 for misdemeanor charges (interfering w/emergency call, false report to police officer & violating protective order).
*Charged (3/16/20) with 2nd degree murder in Minnesota of April Lee Pease.

MMA fighter Cedric Marks to represent himself in double capital murder trial

Veteran MMA fighter Cedric Marks, 45, was charged with two counts of capital murder in 2019. Authorities allege that Marks abducted and killed his ex-girlfriend Jenna Scott and her friend Michael Swearingin and buried them in shallow graves outside of Clearview, OK.

Marks is currently standing trial for those murders with the death penalty a possibility if he is found guilty. At the 436th District Court in Bell County, TX Marks has been granted permission to represent himself in the case (per KCENTV).

Marks made his request to represent himself in June. Judge Steve Duskie ordered that Marks meet with different counsel and then determine if he wished to proceed with his plans. Duskie ultimately granted Marks’ request on August 17.

In addition to being suspected of killing both Scott and Swearingin, Marks has also been charged with the unrelated 2009 disappearance and murder of April Pease. Authorities in Bloomington, MN believe Marks murdered Pease, the mother to one of his children, before removing her teeth and hands to render her unidentifiable. Pease’s body was never recovered.

Kellee Kristine Sorenson, another ex-girlfriend to Marks, claimed she helped Marks kill Pease. Sorenson has been charged with second-degree murder in this case and is awaiting trial.

There is no date currently set for Marks’ trial in the Scott and Swearingin case.

3 years after the murders Harrison said they are looking to expand their reach to helping prevent domestic violence before it begins.

“We have reached out to the schools and eventually I think we’ll be doing more talks at the schools,” Harrison said. “Because I think we need to reach these kiddos before they get out there in relationships and get married or living together to give them warning signs of domestic violence.”

The murder trial for marks is expected to begin in early 2022. Marks has opted to be his own lawyer and represent himself in court.
