Tennis stars and officials raised the alarm after Peng seemingly disappeared after she accused a senior leader of sexual assault.

BEIJING — Missing tennis star Peng Shuai reappeared in public Sunday at a youth tournament in Beijing, according to photos released by the organizer, as the ruling Communist Party tried to quell fears abroad while suppressing information in China about Peng after she accused a senior leader of sexual assault.

The post by the China Open on the Weibo social media service made no mention of Peng’s disappearance or her accusation. The three-time Olympian and former Wimbledon champion was shown standing beside a court, waving and signing oversize commemorative tennis balls for children.

The ruling party appears to be trying to defuse alarm about Peng without acknowledging her disappearance after she on Nov. 2 accused Zhang Gaoli, a member of the party’s ruling Standing Committee until 2018, of forcing her to have sex...

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai informs Olympic committee she is 'safe and well' (nbcnews.com)

Peng had a 30-minute video conference with officials from the International Olympic Committee regarding growing concerns over her safety.

Chinese tennis star Peng Shaui, whose disappearance from the public eye following a sexual assault allegation raised safety concerns, had a video call with top Olympic officials Sunday.

Peng had a 30-minute video conference with the International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and two other IOC officials to discuss her safety, the organization announced Sunday.

"She explained that she is safe and well, living at her home in Beijing, but would like to have her privacy respected at this time," the IOC said. "That is why she prefers to spend her time with friends and family right now."...

She says she is safe and well because her jailers say she is safe and well.
Until she takes a trip unescorted out of China and gives an impromptu interview with a western news organization, I think it’s safe to say, she’s a captive.

Similar story to that Vicki Zhao, the enormously popular actress, and successful businesswoman.
Her career is over, all films and TV series featuring her have been scrubbed, she is "cancelled".

Peng Shuai may be described as "safe", but she certainly is not well.
I wish she could leave, but it's doubtful she can.
Better, I wish she had not been in China when she made the accusation (rightfully) against Zhang Gaoli.

One cannot be a "traitor" to China.
There are many more who have suffered injustice for speaking out, or "offending" the party.

Peng Shuai rift deepens as WTA says China boycott is about 'right and wrong' (nbcnews.com)

“It’s not a decision that can be influenced by business or the dollars or the politics that may be associated with it,” WTA CEO Steve Simon told NBC's "TODAY” show.

SHANGHAI — As its rift with China over the Peng Shuai case deepened Thursday, the head of the Women’s Tennis Association said he was suspending all tournaments in the country's mainland and Hong Kong because some things are “bigger than money.”

The boycott move sparked more angry reaction from Beijing, while Olympics officials said they had held a second video call with the player, who was not seen in public for three weeks after making sexual assault allegations last month against a former senior Chinese Communist Party official.

WTA CEO Steve Simon made his comments to NBC's “TODAY” show, saying he does not believe that China or its tennis authorities have provided sufficient answers over Peng's safety and freedom...
