This entire situation merits a full investigation by a team of investigative journalists. From the placement process of Nubia and her brother, the reports of abuse by the school, subsequent "homeschooling" for the twins, lack of follow up by DCFS, the arrest, and the ongoing obfuscation of the legal system by Jorge Barahona.

The entire situation is outrageous. And I have been following this for over ten years, longer than Nubia was alive.
 
Thursday, August 19th:
*Motions Hearing (@ 9am ET) – FL – Nubia Barahona (10) (missing Feb. 11, 2011, W. Palm Beach, found Feb. 14, 2011 soaked with chemicals in the back of her father’s truck along side Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County), (Victor (10) injured; had acid thrown on him; he was released from hospital 3/2/11) – *Jorge L. Barahona (43/now 54) (adopted father) arrested (2/12/11) , charged (3/7/11), indicted (3/23/11) & arraigned (4/13/11) with 8 felony counts of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm, 8 felony counts of child neglect & attempted murder (Victor) & charged (3/7/11) with 1st degree murder. Plead not guilty. $1M bond. DA will seek DP.
Trial was set to begin on 4/6/20 reset for 6/15/20 & cancelled due to guilty plea on 9/20/20 & now has new attorneys, plead not guilty on 1/7/21.

Plead not guilty. $1M bond.
Plead guilty to 1st degree murder & aggravated child abuse on 2/21/20. Plea deal gives her a life prison sentence in exchange for testimony against her husband. Sentencing will be after she testifies against her husband as agreed.

Child Murder Case Still Hasn't Gone to Trial After More Than a Decade, Here's Why

I don't see the reasoning here...the defendant, Jorge Barahona, doesn't get along or like his court appointed attorneys. He has had several changes of attorneys in the past decade, which is part of why this case has still not gone to trial.

At some point in time, the clock needs to stop. According to the judge, she stated, "Well, I guess we have to get him another attorney.".

Seriously? This can just go on forever, because "bad behavior", not getting along with a court appointed and paid for attorney, is grounds to continue a case? It is delaying the trial, and conviction.

In effect, rewarding the defendant for being an azzhole. No trial, he doesn't like his attorneys, next....how many attorneys can a defendant go through? This is ridiculous.

How many times can a defendant change attorneys (Florida)

There is not a set limit to the number of times a person can change attorneys. The deciding factor, in most cases, is whether the judge overseeing the case will allow the current attorney to withdraw from the case. In some instances, if the case has been pending too long, the judge will simply set the case for trial, which can impede the defendant's ability to change counsel and somewhat set an end-date for the case.
