"The Mono County sheriff’s Office on Friday said it has arrested a man in connection with a two-decades-old killing.

Diego Santiago Hernandez-Antonia, 47 of Mammoth Lakes was booked on a no-bail warrant for the murder of Isabel Sanchez Bernal, 30, of Puebla, Mexico.

The case began in May 2003 when unidentified human remains were found in a shallow grave near Shady Rest Park in Mammoth Lakes. All investigators could determine about her was that the victim was a woman of about 30 to 40 years old and was of indigenous ancestry from southern Mexico.

Recent DNA technology allowed investigators to confirm the body was Sanchez Bernal. The sheriff’s office did not indicate how it determined Hernandez-Antonia was involved in her death."

I'm alerting the mods that she's been identified.
unless this is a different case. i am sure this woman was identified a long time ago. but it may have been in the news, and not here, that i saw this.

ETA - never mind, they had identifed where in MX she was from and that she was Zapotec.

“Since the remains were identified, investigators have been working to solve the murder of Isabel,” they said.

On that note, the only firm detail released is that authorities arrested Hernandez-Antonia for the alleged murder. He is a local from the town of Mammoth Lakes, where the victim’s body was found, authorities said.

Authorities did not say how they believe the suspect committed the crime. Nor did they reveal where the alleged murder precisely occurred, how long they think Bernal remained in the shallow grave, why they believe Hernandez-Antonia killed her, or how the victim and suspect knew one another.

is this the same case, where someone had remembered her from a park where she had made an abuse outcry?

Isabel Sanchez Bernal Was Seen In A National Forest Shortly Before She Was Found In A Shallow Grave
On May 25, 2003, a hiker at the Shady Rest Park in Mammoth Lakes, CA, came across the body of a woman buried in a shallow grave. The Jane Doe was thought to have been murdered between July and November of 2002, but it's presumed that snow covering the burial site prevented an earlier discovery. At the time, an employee of the Mammoth Lakes Visitor Center remembered a woman who had visited the area in the fall of 2002 with her husband, of whom she said she was afraid.

Nearly 20 years later, the woman was identified as 30-year-old Isabel Sanchez Bernal of Puebla, Mexico. Shortly after Bernal was identified through DNA testing, police arrested 47-year-old Diego Santiago Hernandez-Antonia for her murder. Hernandez-Antonia had been living near Mammoth Lakes where Bernal's body was discovered 18 years earlier, but police have not revealed what his relationship was to the deceased.

We were not able to share our involvement in this case until it was made public, but now that it is public, here is our case page:

Mono County Sheriff’s Office Teams with Othram to Identify a 2003 Homicide Victim

Update: The man responsible for her death has just been sentenced to prison.
Isabel came from Mexico City to Mammoth Lakes in 2002 and worked as a housekeeper in Mammoth Lakes. Several months later, her boyfriend, Diego Hernandez-Antonia, also arrived in Mammoth Lakes, where they stayed with extended family. In the fall of 2002, Diego and Isabel went for a walk however, only Diego returned. When questioned later by family members, Diego said that Isabel had left the area with someone else and provided a forged note from Isabel telling her extended family not to look for her.
