Mother-of-three Clair Ablewhite was discovered after officers were called to her home in Hall Lane, Colston Bassett, Nottinghamshire, on Saturday.

A 48-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday has been released under investigation.

Now Nottinghamshire Police has appealed for drivers in the area at the time to come forward "as soon as possible".

#UPDATE | Detectives given more time to question murder suspect

Magistrates have today granted detectives more time to question a murder suspect.

The 26-year-old man has been in custody since being arrested yesterday (Tuesday 8 March) in connection with the murder of mother-of-three Clair Ablewhite.

Clair, 47, was murdered in a knife attack in Hall Lane, Colston Bassett, on the evening of Friday 25 February. Her body was discovered on Saturday 26 February.

Officers attended Nottingham Magistrates' Court this afternoon and were granted a further 36 hours to question the suspect.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin, of Nottinghamshire Police, appealed to people to keep coming forward with information, CCTV or dash-cam footage in and around the area on that night.

"We are receiving new information from the public all the time and this has been incredibly helpful to the investigation," he said.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has come forward so far. Every piece of information we receive is like a jigsaw piece that helps us piece together the full chain of events that night.

"Through the progression of witness information, CCTV, forensic and digital investigations we are starting to see in clearer focus.

"So I'd like to urge anyone else who has not yet come forward to get in touch. We understand some people may have been busy or perhaps even felt nervous about speaking to the police about what they may have seen or heard - but I would reassure you that our detectives are extremely professsional and understanding and simply want to gather all the information they can to get justice for Clair and her family."

Police have had a higher presence than normal in Colston Bassett since the murder, as they continue to carry out investigations and provide reassurance to local residents.

ACC Griffin said that local officers would be happy to speak to and support anyone who has any concerns.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting a new incident number, 277 of 3 March 2022, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. People can also report information through an online portal, here Public Portal

I missed this case at the time. It seems quite intriguing with the charged man being 21 years younger than the victim, nor does there seem a obvious link between the two. Newark is a 90 minutes away from Colston Bassett by bike.

Someone with the same name as the charged man reguarly played for Newark Tennis Club until recently but hasn't played since the arrest.

No doubt we will find out more in June or October.

John Jessop, who admitted the murder mum-of-three Clair Ablewhite after she was stabbed, made a "full confession to the offence" and faces life imprisonement. The question remains how long Jessop will have to serve before his case could even be considered for parole, which will be decided when he is sentenced on Friday, December 9.

Jessop, who had denied the senseless killing in Colston Bassett in February, and was due to face trial next week, dramatically changed his plea to guilty at a short hearing before Judge Stuart Rafferty KC on Wednesday (October 12). He was brought to Nottingham Crown Court from a prison where he has been remanded.

The 26 year old, of Regal Lodge, Sherwood Avenue, Newark, spoke to confirm his name. Then the charge of murder was read out to him and he pleaded guilty.

Peter Joyce KC, defending, said Jessop had made "a full confession to the offence" - and pleaded guilty on the basis of a document handed to the judge.
(…)
Mr Joyce, addressing the judge, said the sentence was going to be "life imprisonment" and the question is going to be what term he will serve before he might be considered for parole. He asked the judge to adjourn sentencing.

Presumably we will have to wait until sentencing to hear what caused John Jessop to murder Clair Ablewhite. I guess the evidence was so overwhelming that he had no choice other than to change his plea. No police mugshot appears to have been released yet.

Assuming it was him on the CCTV then it looked like he hadn't visited the property before, then again she had only lived there a short time like a week.

I was thinking that either they had met on a dating website and/or he tried to commit the pefect murder.
