McCLOUD, Calif. — According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), as of Saturday morning, 66-year-old Terry Knight is still missing.

Knight has been missing since Wednesday morning after he left on a bike ride in McCloud and never returned home. Officials say his wife last saw him before she left for work that day.

Officials later found surveillance footage of Knight riding his bike north on Broadway Avenue in McCloud at 9:12 a.m. on Wednesday. His wife was able to positively identify him in the video

Knight was riding a blue Giant mountain bike with large gravel tires and orange accents. He is 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 175 lbs. with grey hair and blue eyes. Knight also has a heart condition, which is of concern.

Several agencies, including the Siskiyou County Search and Rescue Team and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, are assisting with the ongoing search for Knight.

The McCloud Highschool is being used as the Incident Command Center during the search; housing the over 70 volunteers from 13 other county search and rescue teams.

Knight typically biked in the area of the McCloud Mill, and would often cut new trails in the wilderness that search-and-rescue crews described as remote and heavily wooded, with loose terrain and few markings. Because of heavy tree cover in the area, rescuers aren't able to use infrared technology in their searches for Knight, but said in a Saturday morning post that with that exception "all possible methods and tools are being used in the search efforts to locate Mr. Knight."

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said search and rescue found the mountain bike, helmet and some clothing items that belong to a man last seen on Wednesday.

On Saturday, the team found the items that were confirmed to be those of 66-year-old Terry Knight near Mud Creek, which is northeast of McCloud Mill.

On Saturday, June 25, rescuers found Knight’s mountain bike, helmet and clothing near Mud Creek, which is about 250 miles northwest of Sacramento. “Immediately the SCSO SAR sent additional crews to the area to perform a thorough grid search,” officials said in a news release. “A CHP helicopter flew overhead to try and locate him. Unfortunately, Mr. Knight remains missing.” Officials continue to search for Knight. On Monday, June 27, the sheriff’s office added two mountain bike teams, six K-9 teams and an ATV team to search the area.

"A California Highway Patrol helicopter flew overhead to try and locate him. Unfortunately, Mr. Knight remains missing," the Sheriff's Office said.

Kreider said the presence of Knight's belongings on the ground wasn't unusual. She said Knight and his mountain biking friends would typically bring tools and a change of clothes when they were out cutting trails.

"It's not strange for the investigation that those things were left on the ground because that's something they would routinely do," Kreider said.

Knight's mountain-biking buddies in McCloud have been aiding the search effort each day, telling teams where they think he might've gone and where they've ridden in the past.

According to a series of Facebook posts from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, despite ongoing efforts to locate him, all that’s been found as of Saturday, June 25, are his personal belongings near Mount Shasta’s Mud Creek.

Courtney Kreider, a representative from the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, told SFGATE that Knight is both a local and an experienced mountain biker, making the case somewhat unusual. The department is mostly concerned that Knight, who has a heart condition, needed medical assistance while out in the area, which is thick and difficult to navigate.
"There's a lot of a lot of downed trees. It's a very dense area and you would literally have to be standing over someone to find them," Kreider said. "Some of the vegetation is up to your ears. And so that part is difficult."

RBBM. I can understand why a person might bring a change of clothes in case they got wet or something, but why would they leave the original clothes on the ground? Why not pack them wherever they carried the original change of clothes? And since his bike and helmet were also where the clothes were found, obviously this wasn’t a
‘normal’ scenario. That whole bit about the clothes threw me. MOO and speculation. Praying Mr. Knight will be found safe and soon.

None of the trail apps I looked at show any current "legal" mountain bike trails in that vicinity (Trailforks, AllTrails, MTB Project, etc.), only the Mt Shasta ski park trails NW of McCloud and the Great Shasta Rail Trail due east, which isn't technically even a mountain biking trail. So I would think Mr. Knight was working on what are known as "bandit" or unofficial trails. People don't talk about these on public forums, but it seems odd there has been no mention of any mountain biker groups or others with knowledge of specific trail building plans and efforts in that area. If OTH any trails were being built with National Forest permission, it seems there would have been mention of that too.

Sad to see this case has fallen off the radar.
