IL - July 4 Parade, Highland Park, at least 6 fatally shot, 4 July 2022 *son charged, dad guilty*

I wonder if RC III had any ammo or firearms shipped to him using his mother's UPS store rental mailbox. LE are obviously looking for something they suspect they will find there, so they have orderd the entire store to be closed temporarily. I don't think they would interfere with a private business by doing this unless they had strong reason to believe there was some involvement with RC III and that location, or perhaps his mother involved in something that supported RC? Did RC also have a mailbox there that he rented and kept some things there, such as a wig, etc.?
Yes Sundog, ITA!!! It was odd that LE closed the entire store. Don't see that often - if at all.

Another nagging question I've had all day is - why did he drive to Madison, Wisconsin and then drive back? And LE is refusing to discuss that when asked.

FWIW - those "federal charges" - well, if you partake in a crime that deals with shipping or mailing something - well then, that crosses the threshold of "federal charges".

Wonder how long it will be until we here more of this and what exactly went down.

Correcting my earlier statement, regarding the seventh victim who according to the Coroner, died in Cook County Il.

From this article, it appears there are two child victims who were transferred to other hospitals, both in Cook County. But, neither Hospital is Comers, as I mistakenly posted.

This article also does not state which hospital the victim who passed came from. And, sadly the last press conference did not address the identity of the seventh victim.

"Highland Park Hospital admitted 25 people with gunshot wounds, 19 of whom were treated and discharged. The others were in "more serious condition," said Dr. Brigham Temple, medical director of emergency preparedness.

The wounded ranged in age from 8 to 85, according to Temple. One child was taken to Evanston, for further treatment and another was medically evacuated to the University of Chicago Hospital, about 30 miles south of Highland Park."
I suspect the seventh victim was the child that was taken by helicopter to the U of Chicago - Comers Children's Hospital, in Cook County IL. It is the only Level 1 Children's Hospital in the Chicago area.

This tragedy happened very close to where I live.

It has shaken me to my core.

Prayers for all of the many families that have been affected by this awful tragedy.

I have seen many hateful posts that have responded saying thoughts and prayers don't help.

I strongly disagree. IMO, thoughts and prayers do help, but in the end our country does need to address gun laws and the the mental health of our youth.

Regarding a teen who kills others in a shooting spree, can the parents be held liable if it can be established that they neglected and ignored that child's psychological needs, especially after they allowed him to procure a gun after a previous crisis?

The involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbley parents, is that a precedent? Could that apply here?
I just don't know.

I'm grateful that we only type here and don't speak, because I'm finding myself speechless.

Earlier I'd read that the person who rescued Aiden was happy because the father was "only" shot in the leg, and so she could tell Aiden he'd see his parents soon.

When I saw this news earlier, that he was now orphaned at two years old, I just don't know how to react anymore. Those grandparents lost their adult child and it's not easy to raise a toddler when you are older (I speak from experience with my eldest grandchild, although I was only 47 when she was born). (Ugh, the killer's favorite number, now that I've typed it out).

On Anderson Cooper's show they stated that Crimo's mother was cited for a misdemeanor after leaving him in a hot car for 27 minutes when he was a toddler. I wonder if he ever found out about that and had a lot of resentment and/or anger?

I feel at least thankful that Aiden wasn't physically harmed. I'm grateful that Crimo didn't have a chance to attack the synagogue's congregants after he was discovered casing the place. I'm grateful that the father being interviewed on Cooper had the idea to put his young son and young brother into a dumpster to shield them.

This is a macabre weekly ritual we are experiencing in our country.

Insert place, insert name of killer, insert the number of dead and wounded. Insert the social media that should have been red flags. Insert possibly troubled childhood and possible mental illness. Insert potential motivation. Lather, rinse, repeat, cry.

From the article.

Pesina, however, was a handful, he said. "She got into it once with one of the heads of the program, she was yelling," he recalled. "It seemed like her kids were a nuisance to her."

"The signs were there for a long time," said a neighbor of Crimo. "There were always police cars at the house. The parents were arguing, fighting all the time."

There was trouble brewing well before Robert Crimo massacred people. I would not be surprised if he is an injustice collector or grudge hoarder. Something we have seen with Bath, Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 1771, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Isla Vista, Parkland, Santa Fe, Uvalde, Las Vegas, Orlando, Oklahoma City, and 9/11.

First, he isn't a teen. He is 21 years old. Adult. Don't know how parents can be charged with anything unless they aided and abetted or helped in some way with the crime.

Yes, the Crumbley's situation is a a brand new "thing". And that came about because they bought him the gun.

In this case, he bought the guns.

So U of C hospital is Comers then? I got myself all confused!
Thank you for the clarification, and sadly I suspect the seventh victim is a child also.

While I was at home yesterday, I happened to see the local news breaking regarding the parade. I was dumbstruck! And I was frightened. My daughter and her two littles were at a parade....not close at all to Highland Park, but my heart sank. I didn't want to text her at all...to alarm them...or ruin the good time they were having. So I quietly prayed. And she was continuously sending me photos of the boys waiving at the fire trucks, eating the suckers and candy they had collected. I never said or sent a word about this tragedy to her.. until they were all safely back home. I couldn't.

I'm unmoved by the statement. Sometimes it's better to just say nothing. MOO

Also, here is a report about the police interaction with his mother, from CBS Chicago. I think this may be a hint of why he got no help. Again, jmo.

Same. It was not a tragedy. Drowning is a tragedy.
A mass shooting is a massacre.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

I've actually spent some time this evening trying to find out how a United States citizen can volunteer to help the police or FBI scour the web. I couldn't find anything helpful. The closest I came was to a community policing brochure from 1994, which doesn't reference social media as it did not yet exist. Almost everything else I found was focused on the rights or not rights of LE to search through social media.

As a retired teacher, with time available and some knowledge of how teenagers think, I would absolutely volunteer some time to look for anyone talking about killing others. Or maybe brandishing weapons in a suggestively violent manner.

Do any of my WS peeps know anything about how to do this? Even if we stopped one gunman it would be worth it to me.

I don't know how LE would or could proceed from there, but just to have some extra eyes, trustworthy eyes, to search for this stuff would IMO be a public service.

I could never scour the web for CSAM, I just couldn't bear to see it, but for young men boasting about killing, I'd certainly contact LE.

That is, if I received training as to what is considered actionable, and if they gave me a dedicated computer for this purpose alone. I wouldn't want it on my computer.

If anyone here is knowledgeable and very "sleuthy," I would appreciate it if you would advise me. <modsnip>

TIA

Yes, true.
Though he was a teen in 2019 when he amassed all those knives and threatened to kill his parents, before attempting suicide. And they got him a gun afterwards iirc.

In the Crumbley case, the gun that killed the 4 students was the one bought by his parents. Ethan was 15 at the time.
So yes, I guess Crimo would be considered solely responsible, since he's an adult and bought the guns.

I just don't know.
The man involved in this massacre was 22 yo. His prior incidents with LE were when he was 19 yo and before he had applied for a FOI card with the state of Illinois.
One of my greatest concerns is what parents or other concerned adults can do if they feel someone over the age of 18 is dangerous. What are the resources available or routes they can take to contain a person they feel is a danger to society?

Take good care of yourself during this extremely difficult time.

Watching and waiting for any additional news here in Illinois...and this pops up:

"Brookfield Zoo visitors are sheltering in place after a "potential threat" and the Brookfield, IL police department is investigating, the zoo said."

Cheese and Crackers!!! I have had it!

If mass shootings start at zoos...I just have no words anymore. Does anyone else feel like this is INSANE?!

Oh my gosh, just revceived an email from the CEO of the company I work for sharing that the mother of the little boy worked at our company. Her name is Irina McCarthy. She and her husband Kevin were killed and their little boy was found wondering by himself in the aftermath.

This tragedy has been particulary difficult because I live and work very close to where it happened. My nephew and his wife and 2yo son live in Highland Park and I thank god they were away on vacation when this horrible tragedy happened. For all of the communities, Uvalde, Buffalo, and the too many others, I wish you peace. It is heartbreaking and devastating to think of what all these families have endured.

This has to be difficult, for it to hit so close to home, having a colleague who lost her life at the July 4th parade, who is the mother of the little boy that has gripped our hearts.

In September 2019, a family member reported Crimo had a collection of knives and "was going to kill everyone," Covelli said. Police responded to the incident and seized 16 knives, a dagger, and a sword from Crimo’s possession, Covelli said. Highland Park police notified Illinois State Policeof the incident but no further actions were taken.

Robert Crimo III, 21, was taken into police custody after a brief car chase.

Despite these incidents, Crimo managed to legally buy two high-powered rifles and three other weapons that have since been recovered by officers from his father’s home. Covelli said there was no sign he had any guns at the time of the 2019 incident, nor had he any application pending for a gun.

Yes!!!

The zoo was cleared, all visitors and staff were safely escorted out. Unknown ( at this time) what the reason actually was. Total of two hours on lockdown. Rumors are of course circulating as to why the lockdown was called, but nothing official has been said by LE or Zoo officials.

ETA: Update

The 2019 incidents were not perused by LE because no one involved were willing to press charges. Had his family been willing to press charges this might have ended differently.

IMO, don't blame LE.

Crimo didn’t have a FOID card in September 2019, according to the state police, who normally don’t reveal the details of an individual’s possession of a FOID card.

Then, in December 2019, when he was 19, Crimo applied for his FOID card, according to the state police. Because he was under 21, the application had to be sponsored by a parent or guardian, the state police said.

“The application was sponsored by the subject’s father,” the agency said.

In January 2020, “There was insufficient basis to establish a clear and present danger to deny the FOID application” and Crimo was given a card, according to the state police.

Crimo’s father couldn’t be reached.

In a text message, Crimo’s uncle Paul Crimo called the state police version of events “false statement about sponsored” but wouldn’t elaborate.

…”The revelation about his gun purchases is just the latest example of y oung men who were able to obtain guns and carry out massacres in recent months despite glaring warning signs about their mental health and inclination to violence.

Illinois state police, who issue gun owners’ licenses, said the gunman applied for a license in December 2019, when he was 19. His father sponsored his application.”

——-
I need to know what is involved with “sponsoring.” This indeed could bring prosecutor attention to the father with prior knowledge of shooter’s mental instability. And why didn’t the prior suicidal cry and threats to family not show up in a background check if the police had record of it? Even if no charges were filed. LE had prior knowledge too. Definitely part of our broken “system” that needs fixing.

@Arkay, I admire your initiative and willingness to help identify alarming content, but as you are no doubt aware, many perpetrators of mass murders like this one don’t confine their online activity to “just” violent imagery/content, and combing through the dark underbelly of the web for content that seems like a red flag for a violent mass murder would almost certainly expose you to all types of deeply disturbing material, including images/recordings of CSAM and animal abuse.

Look at the psychological problems experienced by the moderators who work for Facebook and similar social media entities—their experiences make it clear that no training in the world could adequately prepare you for/insulate you from seeing such horrific content on a regular basis!
