CA - 4 Family Members Kidnapped From Business, Merced County, Oct 2022 *arrest*

Salgado, 48, entered his not-guilty plea Thursday morning, KFSN reported. He is scheduled to return to court next month and remains in jail on no bail.

Douglas Foster, Salgado's court-appointed attorney, declined to comment.

JS is scheduled to return to court 12/15, reporter got that wrong. But I guess he couldn't hire his own attorney

I am from WA. It is probably as hard to get DP in California as it would be here. Plus, realistically, JS is 48; the time till execution would probably be equal to LWOP.
CA currently has a Governor imposed moratorium prohibiting DP and district attorneys in some counties including LA no longer consider DP an option. Merced County is obviously different.

Washington was also under a Governor moratorium up until 2018 when the Supreme Court's decision eliminated it entirely, converting the sentences for the state’s eight death row inmates to life in prison without release.

Including Washington’s court ruling, the death penalty has been overturned or abolished in 21 states and the District of Columbia. An additional three states — California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania — currently have moratoriums.

Yes, and here is what one big concern was in the COVID times. GRK was too well-known, so people started protesting. But how many similar criminals got paroled in 2020?

The younger brother of a man charged in the kidnapping and killing of a family in central California pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges he helped his brother.

Alberto Salgado was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, accessory after the fact, and arson of property, the Merced County District Attorney’s Office said.

The victims' family witnessed Salgado in court for the first time.

"It's going through our hearts like somebody is stabbing us again," says Sukhdeep Singh. "The family is already going through the trauma and seeing him again in person, we can't imagine. We can't describe what we're going through."

Alberto is scheduled to be back in court on December 15.

MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The two brothers facing criminal charges in the kidnappings and killings of a family of four made another appearance in Merced County Superior Court on Thursday.

On Thursday, the two brothers appeared in a Merced County courtroom. Outside, family members say they believe justice will be served – but their grief grows with each holiday and hearing.

“It’s really hard to look at those criminals and see that they are in comfort and we are in pain, said relative Balwinder Saini. “Missing our family every moment, it’s just killing us waiting for the justice to be served.”

Saini praised the community’s support, describing it as overwhelming, adding that the family hopes it will continue until the case is over.

Another hearing in this case is set for January 23. A separate bail hearing for Alberto Salgado is set for December 21.

After more than six months after the passing of their loved ones, the family tells Action News their loss is still painful.

"We are living in hell, we want to know what happened to my family, why this criminal act happened - why he ended our life, not just all four of them - he ended our life too," said Sukhdeep.

Tuesday's court appearance was less than five minutes long.

Katie Gates from the Merced County District Attorney's Office says she has filed a motion to consolidate, so both defendants, can have their preliminary hearing at the same time.
