GARFIELD COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 31, 2023 (Gephardt Daily) — Search and rescue crews from several agencies are searching for a 32-year-old Utah man who has been missing since Thursday, Jan. 26.

Austin Madsen was last seen while heading to Kanab to go hiking, according to social media posts attempting to locate him. Madsen’s last known location was Monroe.

Mapleton police pinged Madsen’s cellphone Sunday, Jan. 29, which led deputies to his vehicle in the Dry Hollow area on Mount Dutton, according to a news release from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Search and rescue crews from Garfield, Iron, Piute and Sevier counties located and followed a trail of footprints believed to be Madsen’s for several miles before suspending the search about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions, officials said.

The multi-jurisdiction search resumed at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the assistance of a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter.

“Low temperatures and high winds made visibility for the search incredibly difficult,” the release states. “The rough terrain and deep snow complicated travel throughout the area.”

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.

SEVIER COUNTY, Utah — Several Utah law enforcement agencies have shared a video taken by a man who remains missing after nearly four days.

Austin Madsen was originally reported missing to officials on Sunday and believed to have been driving a black 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche near the Antimony area.

The video shared by the agencies was taken by Madsen, possibly south of Monroe Mountain. It was hoped that someone recognized the location to help in the search. A cell phone "ping" performed by the Mapleton City Police Department resulted in possible location coordinates in Garfield County.

On Tuesday, the Garfield County Sheriff's Office found the truck in the Dry Hollow area on Mount Dutton, with help of teams from Sevier and Iron counties, but Madsen himself was not located.

Early Tuesday, teams followed a trail of footprints believed to have been left by Madsen, but called off the search at approximately 2:30 a.m. due to extreme weather.

Madsen and Garfield county sheriff's deputies, along with a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter and Piute, Sevier, and Garfield county search and rescue crews resumed the search later Tuesday morning. Because of low temperatures and high winds, the search has been described as "difficult."

"The rough terrain and deep snow complicated travel throughout the area," the Garfield County Sheriff's Office said. "This is an active search, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available."

Another social media post said the Madsen's friends or family had not heard from him since Friday.

'It’s not common for him to go this long without any sort of communication,' Emily told 2 KTVU. 'I talked to him via FaceTime and he was snowshoeing and looked like he was having fun, but then he was looking for the truck... I haven’t heard from him since.'

She last heard from him on Friday morning and said he had been facing some mental health problems lately.

He left home a week ago tomorrow. Hopefully he had some food, water & other survival items with him.

Sounds like searchers are doing everything possible in cold, snowy & windy conditions.

Thursday’s search operation involved roughly 20 people on the ground searching for footprints and any sign of Austin.

Search and rescue crews believe Austin parked his truck earlier this week, left his truck to go hiking/snowshoeing and returned to his truck. However, it’s unclear where he may have gone after returning to his vehicle.

Weather conditions have improved in the area over the last few days, however, strong winds had blown a lot of snow over existing tracks.

An updated article on the mental health issues he has faced and how that may impact the search. Search underway in Garfield County for missing father suffering mental health crisis
Awww...his Dad is in the video and I'm crying for him.

It seems that Austin is bipolar and is likely experiencing mania right now. Every several years he has a manic event and leaves to clear his head.

Austin is described as having an adventurous heart, his family says he has many friends because of his loveable heart.

“We’re sustained by faith and prayers of hundreds of people now because of the impact this man has had on so many lives,” Aron Madsen said.

He worries that Austin’s mania has hijacked his stability and that he’ll hide from rescuers who are trying to bring him to safety.

He says he’s grateful for those rescuers for risking their lives in an effort to bring his son home.

In an effort to reallocate resources around the county, Garfield County will transition search and rescue efforts from an intensive ground search to a more "passive approach."

“This includes the monitoring of Austin’s phone, efforts by members of Garfield County Search and Rescue, the listing of Austin in a national database, and an all-police bulletin to be on the lookout for Austin during their routine operations,” said the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office in a statement on Friday. “This does not mean hope is lost. Austin is known to be in great physical shape and has considerable backcountry skills that he can use to survive.”

Sure hope this one turns out with him coming home to his boys & wife.

Bumping

AM is still missing.

His wife & parents posted on Facebook as recently as two days ago that he was not the man also named Austin who was seen in Provo.

A friend posted a video letting him know how many people miss him & are ready to welcome him back.

It's a month tomorrow since he was reported missing.

COME HOME, AUSTIN!
