Brown was quickly recharged in the case after a previous indictment against him was dismissed without prejudice on Dec. 3.

At that time, Second Circuit Judge Peter Cahill set a two-month time limit, or until Feb. 3, to recharge Brown.

Moreira "Mo" Monsalve was last seen on January 12, 2014, at the house of her ex-boyfriend, Bernard Brown. Mo’s daughter, Alexis, reported her mother missing two days later, on November 14, 2014. Several days after that, Mo's belongings were found just a few miles from her Maui, Hawaii home in a dumpster behind the Wailuku Community Center. On September 20, 2019, Brown was indicted by a grand jury for the murder of Mo. He pleaded not guilty to second degree murder. Mo’s family and friends created a ‘Mowatch’ page that is dedicated to finding their lost loved one and to helping other families of missing persons in Hawaii spread awareness. Investigators with the Maui Police Department said that “despite a lengthy and detailed investigation,” Mo’s body has not been found. Moreira “Mo” Monsalve’s daughter and friends faced her alleged killer in a Maui courtroom on Monday.

“I had expressed concerns to Mo, and I told her that she needed to make good decisions and be careful and she felt like she was confident and able to handle herself,” said Matthew Wilkins.

Several friends also testified that Brown never showed up at any of the searches for Monsalve. Brown’s attorney Randall Hironaka said that’s because he was getting harassed by members of the public about Monsalve’s disappearance.

Trial resumes Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Judge Peter Cahill’s courtroom.

Defense attorney Gerald Johnson cited the need “to prevent jury contamination,” given the publicity generated during the search for Mo on Maui. Judge Peter Cahill decided there was no basis to move the trial. On August 25, 2022, Brown was found guilty. His sentencing has been delayed until January 2023. Investigators with the Maui Police Department said that “despite a lengthy and detailed investigation,” Mo’s body has not been found. Just came across this case and I'll follow in case she is recovered. My heart goes out to her family. And to her - to live in fear of/ be harmed by your partner or of your ex is not something anyone should ever have to endure. And there was nothing she could have done about it.
