Unidentified Person / NamUs #UP90200
Unsure, Other
Date Body Found: February 28, 1998
Location Found: Norcross, Georgia

Circumstances of Recovery: This is the companion case to 98G-0135. On February 28th, 1998, a box was found containing human remains at the intersection of Buford Highway and Weaver Way in Norcross, GA. Among the remains pertaining to this particular case are 5 right ribs, 6 left ribs, a clavicle and long bone shaft. According to a forensic anthropology report, these may belong to an individual younger than 1 year of age. The box that the remains were contained in indicated the remains may have come from south Georgia. Companion case: NamUs #UP90199

Now an Othram case:

Who is Norcross Baby Doe (1987)?

The remains were found in the same box (it sounds like) as the mentioned companion case, a teenager:

I would propose that the thread includes both maybe. The note is very odd: "Attention Police, My bones were legally exhumed from South Georgia, please return them to their proper repose." If they were exhumed legally, why has the person who left the note and the box not come forward? Why leave them like that? For what reason were they legally exhumed? To leave them on the side of the road makes it sound like it wasn't legal.

''GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A 25-year mystery may soon be solved thanks to state-of-the-art DNA testing known as Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing, which was developed by Othram Labs, a Texas-based company. ''

''Othram Labs said late Monday evening that its testing confirmed the two children are not related, which just adds to the mystery of this cold case. Othram Labs has helped Pursley and her team track down a possible relative to one of the children.
“It’s a miracle but they were able to pull DNA from the remains,” Pursley explained.
She said while there is no indication of foul play being involved in the children’s deaths, they would like to return the remains to their closest relatives and be able to give the children a proper burial.''

These crime scene photos show where two boxes, containing partial remains of two children, were found on Buford Highway in Norcross in 1998. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office and Othram Inc. are hoping to use genealogical testing to identify the remains.

Officials at the Gwinnett Medical Examiner's Office and private DNA testing laboratory, Othram Inc., are hoping genealogical testing will help them find answers to at least some of those questions.
"We are, in this case, actually pretty optimistic," Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office Forensic Tech Christina Pursley said.

"It's the one case that we have the most traction on right now, which is strange for us because we have other skeletal remains that were fully intact and have a cause of death and we haven't been able to get any identifying information on them. But, we have these partial remains that are old and they were able to get great DNA out of it."

The bones were found in boxes at the intersection of Buford Highway and Weaver Way in February 1998. There is no complete set of bones for either child, one of whom is believed to have been an infant and the other is believed to be a teenager.

The bones were exhumed legally, according to the letter found with the bones, from somewhere in south Georgia, but where is unknown.

Pursley said the bones likely weren't even meant to end up in Gwinnett County. She believed they were probably headed someplace else and ended up falling off a vehicle in the middle of Buford Highway by mistake.

"We only have three scene pictures, so it's mostly speculation, but it looks like the boxes was on a truck and were being moved somewhere, because they were scattered on the road. They're not really thrown or put there purposely," she said.

The box is marked, but I can't make out what it originally contained. That must not have been a clue. It sounds like someone dug up these remains maybe on a building site or farm field and instead of calling the authorities, did this instead.

Maybe they feared it would derail their construction project as if it was an old cemetery, there were likely more remains they may have just left. Or maybe they didn't like contact with LE. Legally exhumed? Hmm..
