Lauren Matthias explained that the recording, along with 28 other phone calls that were “mostly hang-ups,” was released by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office late last week.

The call between Murdaugh and Griffin was posted on TikTok in order to elicit additional information about the exchange from court watchers, Matthias said.

But, Maggie's sister testified that Maggie was adamant that Paul was not the guilty driver in the boat crash. In fact, Maggie was prepared to be ostracized by her community rather than admit that her drunk son was a reckless murderer.

If Maggie believed that Paul was not the driver, then she was not looking for him to settle the boat crash lawsuits. She was dug in. Her family was not responsible.

As it turns out, the husband, Alex, was first to arrive at the housekeeper's "slip and fall" and EMS arrived later ... even though Alex was phoned 30 minutes after EMS was called.

It's quite something to try to understand Alex and the influence he had over his wife.

I don’t recall Maggie’s sister saying Maggie was “adamant” Paul was not driving the boat, though that was certainly what the Murdaughs were chirping at the time.
I do recall Blanca testifying that Maggie told her she was worried about the lawsuit, that Alex shared nothing with her about it, and she kind of wished they would just settle, give them everything and she and Alex would just start over. That doesn’t sound like she was dug in to me.
It sounds to me like Maggie wanted to escape.

Wonder what day in the trial that call was, see who testified that day.

I do not understand why supposedly smart people would release a phone call between AM and his attorney. Even if The CCSC released it in error, these people should have known better. Does this incident now give rise to AM suing the "releasers" for monetary damages?

In cross-examination, defense attorney Jim Griffin asked Proctor if Maggie Murdaugh also wanted to clear Paul’s name in the boat crash. She replied, “sort of.” She told Griffin she didn’t fault Alex Murdaugh for wanting to clear Paul’s name but thought his priority should have been focused on finding the killer.

During cross-examination, Proctor said Maggie Murdaugh was adamant that her son wasn't driving the boat and wanted to clear his name too.

Well it certainly is a violate of the SC Code.

(d) A public body may not disclose a "privileged communication", " protected information", or a "protected identity", as defined in Section 23-50-15 pursuant to a request under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act. These matters may only be disclosed pursuant to the procedures set forth in Section 23-50-45.

She certainly did -- "adamant" is a direct quote from her testimony when being examined by JG on 2/14/23:

But Proctor said that as time went on, there were some nagging doubts that entered her mind, especially Alex Murdaugh's focus on Paul Murdaugh's role in a 2019 boat crash where a teenager died. Investigators said Paul Murdaugh was driving the boat and charged him with boating under the influence.

“He said that his number one goal was clearing Paul's name,” Proctor said. “And I thought that was so strange because my number one goal was to find out who killed my sister and Paul.”

During cross-examination, Proctor said Maggie Murdaugh was adamant that her son wasn't driving the boat and wanted to clear his name too.

A jailhouse recording of convicted double murderer Alex Murdaugh speaking with one of his defense attorneys was released over the weekend – a recording that appears to have been made sometime during Murdaugh’s recent Colleton County, S.C., trial in the shooting deaths of his wife and son.

[..]

Hidden True Crime, in a February open records request, asked for “any and all jail phone calls made, placed by” Richard Alexander Murdaugh while in the custody of the sheriff’s office, the Colleton County Jail, or the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, their South Carolina state Freedom of Information Act request says.

Typically, conversations between attorneys and their clients are protected by the attorney-client privilege – which protects and is determined by the client; often a client must raise the privilege or have their attorney raise it on their behalf.

Murdaugh’s attorney on the call, for his part, confirmed he was the other person and expressed outrage over the turn of events.

[..]

Law&Crime reached out to Griffin and a representative for Murdaugh’s legal team about the audio but no response was immediately forthcoming.

Law&Crime also reached out to the CCSO for information about why they felt the call did not originally merit such protections but no response was immediately forthcoming.

In an email sent to Hidden True Crime the day after the audio was originally shared on TikTok, the CCSO requested the phone call not be shared.

“It has come to our attention that one of the calls released through the FOIA response falls under attorney/client privilege,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a March 18 email to the outlet. “Please do not share this call.”

IMO, this call was intentionally shared on TikTok by the YT couple/creators because they know that authorities can request YT remove the content from their platform and YT will comply whereas TikTok seems to be unregulated and not as likely to take immediate action.

I'm not liking this practice. Two wrongs don't make it right. JMO

ETA: Appears the content is no longer on TikTok.

Its still on YT.

Seems like little effort was made to stop the reproduction of the call.

Just adds to the many thoughts I have for these individuals.

Moo...

They said they didn't know who it was.

But even so, there's nothing damning or revelatory in any way in the call, it's harmless. They both know the calls are recorded or monitored so he's not going to confess on the phone call or anything like that.

Now they are saying on Twitter that they posted it because they were wanting to understand who was on the call:rolleyes:

To be clear, they said they don't know who it was. But maybe they meant they didn't know which attorney.

CCSO released 28 calls (many were hangups) to the YT/podcast creator over the weekend via FOIA, and obviously, the call with AM/JG was included in error.

As soon as they were aware, LE contacted "Hidden True Crime" and/or Lauren Matthias and requested they cease sharing the content.

If HTC alleges they did not know it was AM and his attorney, that's complete rubbish! Anybody listening knows it's AM and JG.

At least this call has brought a couple of questions to my mind along with an observation about the trial.
Question: can an inmate make calls anytime they want? <snipped by me>
Question: are phone calls made from their cell or do they have to go to a central location to use the phone?
Question: if it's after "lights out" when they want to make a call, does the inmate have to get a guard to escort them to the phone?
Observation: AM must have been a real problem to DH and JG, calling them whenever he pleased and had an idea about something they did or didn't do. <snipped by me> This is just 1 phone call. Imagine how many more they were forced to take while they were trying to decompress from the courtroom and prepare for the next day and contact their own families and eat and shower and sleep. I never really thought about AM plaguing them after hours with his "demandingness" . I have a little more sympathy for JG and DH now and I wonder if they knew it would be this taxing on them.
