UK - Manhunt after 27 year-old mother pushing her baby in a pram was fatally stabbed on 6 April 2024, Westgate area in Bradford

A very good catch and to expand on your speculation maybe the original assault was to do with him being denied seeing his baby?

My original thoughts were they was both in a secret relationship and things turned sour. I say this as Masum was reported as believed to be married.

The word "honour" springs to mind.

Suspect in stabbing of Kulsuma Akter is on bail over alleged threat to kill her

Masum was conditionally bailed by Manchester magistrates court in November despite prosecutors objecting to his release. He pleaded not guilty to both offences at a hearing in November last year and was ordered not to contact Akter.

Masum’s bail conditions also prevented him from contacting a second person or visiting a particular address.

Court documents show that he was charged with threatening to kill Akter on 24 November and assaulting her on 23 November. Both offences were alleged to have happened in Manchester.

At a press conference on Monday, it was revealed that Masum was known to police and that Akter had had previous contact with officers. Two forces have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

“On Saturday he was captured on CCTV getting on a bus. He was last seen walking in the direction of Bradford Moor Park. This is our last confirmed sighting of him.”

Miller said a significant amount of resources were going into the search, which includes examining CCTV and conducting house-to-house inquiries. “We also have local Bradford officers carrying out increased patrols in the area, which I hope will be of some reassurance to residents,” he said.

Greater Manchester police said it has referred itself to the IOPC over previous contact with the victim and the suspect.

“Habibur Masum is wanted by West Yorkshire police on suspicion of murder. Due to his links to Greater Manchester, we have our specialist officers following several lines of inquiry to locate him.

“Due to previous police contact with Habibur Masum and Kulsuma Akter, Greater Manchester police has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”

Miller said West Yorkshire police had previous contact with the victim and had referred itself to the IOPC as a result.

Renewing his appeal to the public for information, he said: “I believe him to still be in the country at this moment in time.”

Masum is believed to be from Bangladesh and was in the UK on a student visa, and later a postgraduate visa after he obtained his degree.

I hope to god he hasn't slipped out of the country as it's unlikely he'll ever be seen again if he's gone back to Pakistan.

No extradition treaty and if he's got family with money...

"The suspect, from Oldham, was arrested in the early hours of this morning in the Aylesbury area - 180 miles away from Bradford. He is believed to be the father of the child - according to locals - and his Facebook says he is married."

So the speculation that he is the father of the child could be true. Makes me wonder if he was married to the victim.

Glad he was caught quite quickly.

Police arrest man, 25, on suspicion of murdering Kulsuma Akter

Bail for a foreign national (therefore obvious flight risk) on a threats to kill (therefore extremely serious) charge is absolutely ridiculous. I’m sick of these pro-defendant, anti-public safety decisions. If judges don’t have the tools to lock up this type of defendant then the law has to change. If they do then this judge must be replaced, I’m not a court-bashing type but this is ridiculous.

Thank goodness they have caught him but it’s too late for his victim.

Cases like this infuriate me, because generally the systems take more care to protect the criminal than to protect the victim.
And then there's stuff like most major employers publishing the names, and contact details of all their workers on a web page. Office location is obvious from there, even office hours are usually listed. We are living in an abusive stalkers paradise. And if you want to protect yourself, it is a very uncomfortable and usually not beneficial conversation about you NOT wanting your info on the internet for anyone to find...

Having checked the law, I see that threats to kill is an “each way” offence and can be referred to the Crown Court. I also see that Masum was also accused of assault, so the court had reason to believe the threats were more than idle in this case, that Masum was dangerous, and in addition that their sentencing powers might not be sufficient therefore Crown Court suitable. The assault charge added to Masum’s immigration status would also be good reasons to deny bail.

I have no idea why these sorts of charges go before a magistrate who should be restricted to TV licensing and other non-violent nonsense… the assault charge plus the threats to kill charge clearly puts this in a different category. I want this magistrate off the bench if they have any decency.

Bradford stabbing: Mum of Kulsuma Akter 'can't stop crying'

The mother of a woman stabbed to death as she pushed her baby in a pram "cannot stop crying", her family has said.

[…]

Her cousin Aftab Miah said the 27-year-old had been "polite and humble" and "made the people around her laugh".

He said that her family were "devastated", with her mother in Bangladesh distraught.

Mr Miah added that the family wanted "justice".

[…]

Mr Miah said when he spoke to Ms Akter's mother, she had "never stopped crying" and was "all the time mentioning her name".

"All we want is justice, nothing else," he added.

"Not revenge or anything, just justice for our sister."

Ms Akter's cousin, Aftab Miah, has also revealed that she had a traditional arranged marriage to Habibur Masum just over two years ago in Bangladesh.

He then came to the UK to study and she accompanied him as a dependent.

The couple were living in Oldham in a flat above a shop. Ms Akter has two older brothers living in the town, as well as a sister and another brother in Bangladesh. She was the youngest of five siblings.

Mr Miah revealed that she did not work, spoke limited English and relied on her husband for her financial survival.

Poor, poor woman. She was put in such a vulnerable situation.
I'm so angered that he was able to do what he threatened.

A service, organised by women from across the city, took place in Centenary Square in Bradford on Saturday afternoon, with about 100 people in attendance.

A minute's silence was held at 15:21 BST, to mark the exact time emergency services were first alerted to Ms Akter's injuries.
