The latest on Charles Darnell and Jaren Ashley Hare is that the pre-trial has been re-scheduled for April 19, 2011

Did they ever say what happened to the poor starved snake??? :(

***snipped***

I read where they let the little girl hug it and hold it also.

The Humane Society of the United States said including Wednesday's death, at least 12 people have been killed in the U.S. by pet pythons since 1980, including five children.

I just read this story and needed to comment here. Snakes get a bad rep for this very reason, but this has nothing to do with the snake. This is SOLELY about the irresponsibility of the pet owners. First of all, I have known several people who have had a large snake in a house with small children as well as other small animals. Although snakes cannot be purely domesticated like a dog or a cat, they can be docile and tame, and they can make safe pets if cared for properly. If they are enclosed in a secure environment and fed as needed, they don't pose a danger to anyone, because they will NOT escape randomly. The people I know do NOT let their children hold the snake, (ETA)mainly because the rapid movements of a child can startle them. Even if they did scare, they still would most likely only strike and back away, not constrict.

Also, consider that if only 12 people have been killed by pet pythons since 1980, more people have died from vicious dog attacks. In my opinion, a poorly trained and unsupervised dog is far more dangerous than a pet snake. This is just a sad case of people being irresponsible.

Trial to begin in case of python that killed toddler
Couple accused of failing to protect 2-year-old girl from being strangled by snake

Jury selection is set for Monday in the case of Charles "Jason" Darnell, 34, and Jaren Hare, 21. They are accused of failing to keep the 8-foot-6-inch albino Burmese python from slithering out of a terrarium in July 2009 and into bed with the toddler, Shaianna Hare.

The couple, who will be tried together, could get 35 years in prison each if convicted of all charges.

Darnell and Hare, Shaianna's mother, had been dating for two years before the snake attack, and Darnell had planned to adopt the little girl. The couple had a child together about a month after Shaianna's death.

Jury picked in killer python case; couple rejected plea deal

BUSHNELL — As he hurried past reporters at the Sumter County courthouse, where a jury was picked today in the case of a killer python, Charles Darnell insisted the death of his girlfriend's daughter "was an accident."

But the panel of six jurors that includes two grandmothers will be asked to decide that issue.

Prosecutors contend Darnell, 34, and the child's mother, Jaren Hare, 21, acted with reckless disregard for the safety of 2-year-old Shaianna Hare on July 1, 2009, when the toddler was strangled by an 8-foot-6-inch Burmese python they kept as a pet.

The couple who will be tried together rejected a plea offer that would have capped any prison time at 10 years, assistant state attorney Pete Magrino revealed to Circuit Judge William (Bud) Hallman before jury selection began.

If convicted of involuntary manslaughter, third-degree murder and child neglect as charged, the couple, who became parents again about a month after Shaianna was killed, could receive as many as 35 years in prison.

Jury selection was completed today. Five women and two men one of whom will serve as an alternate. Opening statements will be Tuesday morning at the Sumter County Courthouse. It should be interesting to see the results of this trial after the Anthony debacle in Orlando last week.

Prosecutor calls snake 'instrument of death' in killer python trial
Defense lawyer calls death 'terrible accident'

BUSHNELL — The grandmother of Shaianna Hare, the toddler strangled in her crib by a pet python in July 2009, testified today that she begged her daughter not to keep the 8-foot-6-inch snake in the house because its container did not have a secure lid.

Sheryl Hare of Weirsdale in Marion County said she so feared for the safety of her tiny granddaughter that she also offered to buy the snake from her daughter, Jaren Hare, 21, for $500 and suggested that they put a plywood lid over the 200-gallon snake tank and anchor the lid with cement blocks.

Prosecution, defense rest case in in killer python trial

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/lake/os-killer-python-state-rests-20110714,0,2231821.story

BUSHNELL — The state and defense both rested their cases today in the manslaughter trial against a couple in Sumter County where a pet python strangled a child two years ago.

The final prosecution witnesses were Gainesville-area snake-farmer Eugene Bessette and deputy medical examiner Wendy Lavezzi who testified that the snake asphyxiated 2-year-old Shaianna Hare and tried to "ingest her, basically."

The toddler's mother, Jaren Hare, 21, and the mother's live-in boyfriend, Charles "Jason" Darnell, 34, could be sentenced to 35 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter, third-degree murder and child neglect. Their lawyers contend that the killing of the toddler in July 2009 by a pet Burmese python named Gypsy was a terrible but unpredictable accident.

The defense rested its case without calling either Hare or Darnell to testify.

Just heard on the car radio that they were found guilty...didn’t catch when the sentence would be known. I guess it will have to be more than the 10 year plea deal they turned down.

Now that is how a jury should deliberate. Two hours and guilty.

The reverse speech analysis of Charles Darnell indicates that the snake did not get out on its own, Darnell intentionally released it. If you just look at the two known reversals they tell a different story than he was saying in the forward to the 911 operator...

...Based upon his reversals alone the charges seem appropriate for at least him.

...Right now he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, but for now it appears that the use of Reverse Speech has proven to be accurate as far as Darnell being responsible for the actions which lead to the child's death.

I'm going to live with what I did. I released it out.

Reverse speech analysis proves accurate once again!

Uh oh. That can only mean one of two things. This thread is about to get shut down, or deleted!
