GUILTY Canada - Romeo Cormier for holding 54yo woman captive, Moncton, NB, 2010

http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/Accused+says+killer+hire+kidnapper/5015870/story.html

He also told the jury that anyone who thinks he needs to abduct someone to have sex is mistaken.

"Do I look like a man who can't get laid?" he said, loudly. "Give me a break."

Sounds like a great excuse to deny kidnapping. SOOO much better to say you are a killer for hire! I find it amusing that he is so threatened by the thought of anyone saying he is not man enough to attract women for sex.

On the night she went missing, Cormier was adamant that he never kidnapped her at the back of the mall. He said he was waiting for her there and she got dropped off by a woman in a car.

Hmmmm....doesn't that contradict the video tapes that we saw, where DOR exited The Bay right after work?..and the fact that her vehicle was left in the parking lot?

I know I shouldn't pick away at his testimony, as it doesn't deserve comment, but I just can't resist. I guess he has nothing to lose by coming up with this 'fanciful' story.

'Why would I kill my husband for something like Romeo Cormier?' woman testifieshe The Canadian Press Jun 29, 2011 12:05:00 PM
The Crown recalled the woman to the witness stand Wednesday after Romeo Cormier, who is charged in the alleged abduction, concluded his testimony earlier in the day.

The woman — whose identity is protected by a publication ban — said there was never a plan to kill her husband, contrary to Cormier's testimony.

"That never happened. My husband and I have a great relationship," she told Crown lawyer Annie St. Jacques.

LOL that she called him "something" and not "someone"

Romeo Cormier found guilty in kidnap, sexual assault case

http://www.montrealgazette.com/news...kidnap+sexual+assault+case/5058262/story.html

MONCTON, N.B. — Romeo Cormier was found guilty on Wednesday in connection with the high-profile kidnapping and sexual assault of a Moncton woman.

Cormier, 63, abducted the 55-year-old last year, holding her hostage for 26 days and sexually assaulting her repeatedly.

The jury convicted Cormier on all six charges: kidnapping the woman with the intent to confine her, unlawfully confining her, using violence to steal her money, keys, cellphone and jewelry, assault with a knife, sexual assault and uttering death threats.

The woman, who can't be named because of a publication ban, testified earlier in the trial that she was abducted outside a Moncton mall the night of Feb. 26, 2010, slashed on the hand with a knife, forced to walk to Cormier's home and kept prisoner and sexually assaulted for almost four weeks.

Cormier still harassing his victim:

Following the jury's decision, Cormier smiled, looked towards the woman and gave her a thumbs-up before he was led out of the packed courtroom.

“He's just a man with no remorse,” the woman said outside court.

“He thinks the world owes him something, and he thinks he can do what he wants and everybody has to cater to him. He thinks he's a somebody. He's just a mean person.”

She said she felt a sense of relief once she heard the jury's verdict.

“I can move on with my life,” she said. “Hopefully things can get back to normal from here on in.”

I'm very happy he is going to jail hopefully for as long as possible and that the victim is in the arms of her husband. I'm also happy this case went through so quickly.

And today, the sentencing...

Cormier gets 18-year sentence in N.B. abduction case
Crown attorney Annie St. Jacques sought a life sentence for the man, saying the victim will have to deal with the psychological effects of her ordeal for some time.

Cormier's lawyer sought a sentence of 10 to 12 years, minus 17 months already served awaiting trial and sentencing.

Dionne suggested it was unlikely Cormier could be rehabilitated.

"The chances of his rehabilitation -- never say never -- are small," Dionne said.

According to another article, his own defense lawyer said that Cormier has no remorse.

Hopefully the victim and her family can begin the very tough process of healing now.

I read this today and wondered why he didn't receive the maximum sentence? He is not remorseful and poses a danger to the public.

I wondered about that too, Matou! It just doesn't seem right. How can the community (let alone the victim) come to any peace when they know that this guy will be back out while he is still young enough to commit other crimes.
