CA CA - Matthew Greene, 39, Mammoth Lakes, 16 July 2013

I think this young man is gorgeous.
His eyes, his smile, he just "looks" like such a sweet guy who would be so much fun.

If I saw a pair of glasses lying by a trail, I would probably hang them on a sign or set them on a fencepost, thinking to make them more conspicuous if the owner came searching for them.

Yep, we've done this while snowmobiling.
Found something and hung it on the sign right by the parking lot.

CNN just had this on. Hopefully it will help generate some leads.

I agree,he probably fell from somewhere.

Where is his Subaru?

He had car trouble which is why he got seperated from the group of friends he was hiking with. He had to stay and wait for his car to be repaired. His friends carried on without him. Matthew never did return to the garage to retrieve his vehicle.

IIRC it is one of those who treked on ahead -- his friends gf -- that reported him missing to authorities.

Matthew's story is featured on the Yahoo News homepage.

"The last time anyone heard from Greene was on July 16. He was texting with friends before going to bed around 9:30 p.m. at Shady Rest Campground, "but from there, we don't know what happened," Ron Minto said. "

I checked out the New Shady Rest Campground website here and noticed this:

For campers interested in local events, the Mammoth Jazz Jubilee is hosted in Mammoth in mid-July. Several other events and amenities are available in town.

Going to the Mammoth Jazz website here I noticed the dates are July 16-20.

Is it possible he went there to check it out and maybe something happened to him? Any word on his car? Was it left at the campsite?

NM. I found info on the car here.

The last known person to have contact with Greene talked to him on July 16. He was camping at Shady Rest Campground while his vehicle was being repaired at a local shop. Mr. Greene has not returned to Shady Rest Campground or picked up his car from the repair shop.

The sister of 39-year-old Matthew Greene says a hiker found the glasses hanging on a sign at a trailhead near the Inyo Craters region of the Eastern Sierra. The glasses have been turned over to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, which is investigating Greene's disappearance.

Tiffany Minto said Saturday that the glasses look “strikingly similar” to the ones worn by her brother. She says his optometrist has provided information about his prescription in hopes of helping police confirm the glasses are Greene's

Why just now is this national news? I didn't hear about him 6 weeks ago .

Also from the link above

Now, Greene's sister Tiffany Minto is considring hiring a private investigator 'just to exhaust every possible avenue'.

Minto at first suspected that her brother might have been in an accident but now she thinks he could have been the victim of foul play.

Police say Greene may have tried hitch-hiking to a remote area to hike or climb.

I might have missed the car repair shop address, do you have it? And how was he suppose to get to the camp grounds (back home) from the repair shop? Or was his car suppose to be fixed on the spot and was he suppose to wait for it. Thanks

I just read that the last time anyone heard from him was texting friends at 9:30 July 16th from the campground before going to bed. So he didn't go to the Jazz festival that night. And his car was going to take a week to fix. No one has come forward to say they gave him a ride to a trailhead - so how did he get to the point where his (possibly his glasses) were found. Hmmm...

Has it been reported what was left at the campground? Tent, sleeping bag, clothing? Any pings from his cell phone? Any pics of his campsite? Was there anyone on duty who came around to collect campground fees? What were the contents of his last telephone call(s) and text(s)? When did he check in at the campground?

Sorry for all the questions, but seems a lot of info is missing, imo.

Searches of the vast wilderness for the former Peace Corps volunteer have thus far been unsuccessful. A hiker recently found a pair of eyeglasses that might belong to Greene.

From what I understand from reading on another site linked up thread (I believe)....

His car was left at Norco Service Center - Goodyear (3670 Main St.) which was a little over a mile away from the campground Matt was staying at so therefore he would have easily walked between the two.

First post top of this page and on - lots of details shared, phone records, etc...:

From what I have gathered.....everything he brought with him on the trip was left at the campground with the exception of a black and white backpack, yellow boots, a pair of crampons, an ice axe, his cell phone, a red digital camera, his wallet, the items he was wearing and some pages out of a hiking book and the few items that were found to be with his car in the shop. He was planning on leaving on July 18th when his car was supposed to be ready for him to pick up. He had paid for his stay at the campground for the night of the 16th and 17th. The camp host threw all of his belongings in storage when he hadn't returned (not sure exactly when this occurred.) He was on his cell phone texting friends the afternoon and evening of the 16th up until approximately 9:30pm (I don't have the exact times in front of me) normal conversations, nothing out of the ordinary, no mention of what he would be doing the following day. The pings from his phone put him at or near the campground, where he was believed to be, during that time period. A text came into his phone close to 3am PST on the 17th from a friend back home. I am under the impression that his phone had been powered off and then turned on for a very brief period at that time and that is why the text was received. It is my understanding that the phone may have been in another location in the Mammoth area (not the same location as it has been the night before) when that text was received. No further cell phone activity; it is believed his phone battery is dead. I believe he checked into the campground with his friends near the end of June. Hope that helps!

"Gear:
He was carrying a large black/white backpack, yellow LaSportiva Nepal Extremes boots, crampons, and one ice axe. He did not have his tent, bivvy, sleeping bag, stove, or green heavy jacket indicating he only expected to do a day hike.

Last known contacts:
His Father via phone: July 16th
Friend via text (no info): night of July 16th"
