I think she most likely found something...if he confessed to her it would most likely not be enough for an arrest, and might not even be enough for a warrant because spousal privilege could be argued.
WHAT IF they knew RA was there from the beginning...he left fingerprints...but it was in a public area but not enough probable cause...think of the wording used in the early press conferences...

I think it also comes down to legal issues and the right to privacy...it depends on where they obtain DNA for reference. Depending on the company and what the consumer signs as rights to privacy limits (or doesn't limit) use to LE agencies.
I think this has been strategic from the very beginning...they have done an excellent job at keeping information quiet to ensure the preservation of evidence.
