I think it's as simple as the L's knowing about where he was in the reserve and LE didn't find him due to the water. The L's knew about where to look today and since the water has recently receded, well, boom.
-Would explain the high amount spent in a short period of time.
-Would explain the outing/camping with family before he disappeared.
-Saw his nephews.
-Would explain why he went home in Gabby's van at all.
-Several one last time moments.
IMO, she didn't want to be separated from Brian AND the van. One, she feared driving the van herself, and because of that Brian did most if not all of the driving. She may have also feared sleeping in the van without him, or camping alone if she pulled out the tent. I know I would fear sleeping...
