I emailed the head reference librarian at the University of San Francisco who has a huge knowledge of Joyce Carol Oates' novels and maintains her website. I told him that there was a community here at WebSleuths who wanted to find out Lyle's identity and I asked if Ms Oates was aware of the...
RSBM.
Great analysis.
Perhaps Lyle wasn't even aware of this, but it seems Joyce Carol Oates was no stranger to using pseudonyms herself. 'Rosamond Smith', 'Rae Jolene Smith', and 'Lauren Kelly' were her aliases of choice when writing some of her mystery novels in the 1990s. I can't find any...
Oh I see, thanks. There sounds like there's some interest in Lyle over there then, but nowhere near as much as something like Grateful Doe. Which is a shame, because the more exposure Lyle has, the more resources/information we could share. Something like getting a copy of the newspaper for...
Yes, they have an awful feature where messages go into an 'other' folder if you're not friends with that person. I only realised I had one the other day, with unread messages dating back to 2010. Very few of them were actually spam. However, from my understanding, the owner of the Facebook group...
Here are a few bits and bobs to tell you about.
1. Last week, the daughter of the maid who found Lyle was contacted by the guy who runs the Facebook group about ghost stories (she had left a message about Lyle in 2014), inviting her to join outofthedark's Facebook group. She has yet to respond...
Fellow sleuthers, this one's perplexing to say the least. In 2009, a white male - estimated to be between 50 and 70 years old - arrives in the beachside town of Sligo, Ireland, by bus; checks into a hotel with a presumably false name; and pays in cash. Four days later his body is found on a...
I wanted to clarify whom we could contact on social media etc., as there's been some confusion on here. I take it that Lyle's is a very unique case on WS as it's one of the few where there are no suspects or victims of a crime. Anyway, I contacted a mod - I got this response.
I like it - but maybe something less formal? Perhaps..
"[Name], hello my name is [x], sorry to bother you... I just saw your Facebook post about the ghost story in the Lake Quinault Inn. You mentioned a guy who committed suicide in 2001 - your mom was the maid who found him. We are trying to...
I apologise if this sounds insensitive but are we still waiting for a response from VD-G? Or has she not been contacted? If it's the latter, I'm happy to send her a message if no-one else has.
I would love to hear from MD - she's one of three people who could possibly move this case forward...
I don't recall there being any mention of how long Lyle was planning to stay. If I've missed something, please correct me.
Regarding the Monday "check-out" date, there seems to be a conversation (or several conversations) between Lyle and motel staff that law enforcement are not aware of.
If we go back to this:
MD seemed to have known that Lyle was checking out on Monday - a detail not mentioned by BW or the motel owner in the case files. Perhaps there was some kind of arrangement where Lyle would pay for the room after his stay? I wonder why the motel gave him 'credit'...
Good luck with this. Facebook will send her a notification when you reply to her post so she should see it. I hope she replies!
I never noticed this before - you're right. For argument's sake, say Saturday and Sunday cost the same as Friday, then Lyle left enough for almost four nights, not...
Has anybody contacted VD-G (the daughter of the maid) yet on Facebook? She posted a link to one of the Web Sleuth threads about Lyle when she wrote that Facebook post, so she's obviously been following the case somewhat - well up until 2014 at least. I would really like to hear from her, and I...
What happened to Lyle's other clothes? Were they in a backpack? A car? Did he arrive in the clothes that he would die in?
My question is this: would clothes not start to smell if you wearing them for three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)? CCM said the clothes Lyle was found in were not...
Hi Eugene!
You mentioned on Reddit that there might be might be some more stuff released into the public domain regarding this case. Can we still expect this? The case files have already provided us with very valuable information. Thanks.
It's a very interesting theory. If you were living in your car for a while, that might explain why he took a shower as soon as he arrived in the room. Plus, the pacing could suggest he was looking for the car if he parked it close to the main road.
Also, the store (where Lyle bought the...
If the motel doesn't have a website, would it only be known to locals/people who have visited the area before do we think? There's not a lot of information about it at all... I wonder if it was advertised locally or in travel guides back in 2001.
Ah, sorry, that was my mistake. I checked online for all the motels in the area, and that looked the closest. Well, I wouldn't have even come across the motel you've just mentioned because there's very little about it online. You're right - they still don't have a website, looks like they never...
