I know if my child were missing I would offer a reward for any information that could help me find him/her especially if I thought they might harm themselves. That’s just me though. I also wouldn’t lie to authorities either. Makes me truly believe the parents know he is alive and on the run/hiding.

This is a good theory! I hadn’t considered that he may have hitch hiked after the fact just to have an alibi! This would explain why he told them he had been hiking for days along Snake River.

I don’t necessarily think it was premeditated. I think he was in a panic trying to get back to the van to leave once he realized what he did or what happened. They could have just gone on a hike and got into an argument/went into a rage and he snapped.
