I read nothing odd in the comments about meals. I come from a city of about the same size with running tracks nearby. I think our community response would be similar. The reputation of the community is part of the reaction. They all feel the duscomfort and collecfively fall into soothing...
…and surely they needed to keep feeding happy photos of the child back to Grandma for reassurance that she was having a good time. I have a feeling that the verandah where she was ‘last seen’ would potentially have been a better background for reassuring photographs.
Unfortunately, someone has to defend these people. We have a family member who does so in another state. The burnout rate and psychological torment is real.

I know someone who has done this out west for road construction probably to do with mines. He had to take a mat to stand on because the road was melting. That would be the higher end and just a terrible job.
