Man’s lower torso and legs found in Arlington Heights

Neighbors are stunned by grisly discovery in trash bag

April 18, 2010|By Daarel Burnette II, Tribune reporter

Monica Muramatsu said she thought it was strange that her schnauzer was sniffing by the trash bin during a walk in her Arlington Heights neighborhood Friday afternoon.
"I just figured he wanted some treats from the trunk of my car," she said.
Two hours later, dozens of Arlington Heights police officers descended on her apartment complex after the lower half of a white man's body was found in a black garbage bag next to the trash bin.

Praying this person is id'd and their killer brought to justice.
I can't think of any recent missing persons reports in this immediate area.

Investigators hope tattoos on body parts found in Arlington Heights will lead them to the identity of the victim.

Officers found the body parts in a plastic bag next to an apartment building dumpster Friday.

Investigators know the victim was a Caucasian or Hispanic male. They hope reproductions of the tattoos will lead someone to identify him.

(semi graphic details in full article)

Two of the tattoos appear to be the image of a "joker" mask, also known as "Laugh Now Cry Later." The image of the joker smiling appears on the right side of the pelvic area, and the image of the sad joker is on the left side. They are about 3 inches in size.

Investigators also found the letter "C" just above the right knee about 1 inch in size.

Police note that only half of the "Joker" tattoos can be observed on the remains.

Police send off DNA from severed body for possible identification
b

It might be more than a week before Arlington Heights police can identity the severed body found in an alley Friday night.
"We're taking DNA samples and sending them downstate," said Cmdr. Ken Galinski of the Arlington Heights Police Department. "We're first in line, but it may take a while."
Police do know the partial body belonged to a male, either white or Hispanic.
They also know that the person was not involved in the drug bust from last week, Galinski said.
"Everyone involved in that has been accounted for," he said.

It sounds like perhaps LE might have reason to believe those tat's were gang related tattoos. Perhaps that is why they are discussing submitting DNA so quickly. I don't recall reading or hearing about DNA being submitted so quickly unless it was for a potential match against a missing person, but I could be wrong and just not have read about another scenario such as this one.

Either way, he deserves his name back and to be reunited with his family for proper closure.

Hoping submitting his DNA leads to his id.

Cook County Forest Preserve Police are investigating after the head and torso of a human body were found today in the Lions Woods Forest Preserve, officials said.

The remains of an unidentified person and unidentified gender was found near the intersection of Golf and River Roads in Maine Township, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

In a statement released today, officials said the body was found at about 11:30 a.m. <snip>

The body was found along the shoreline of the Des Plaines River in the Lions Woods, he said.

Also from article:
Mayberry said he could not comment on any possible link between the Lions Woods case and the discovery on April 16 of severed human remains in a bag at the Marketview Apartments in Arlington Heights.

I wondered immediately if the two were related.

Another article indicates this may be or appears to be a female torso. However, I don't know if 'appears to be' is a confirmation.

Related to information public receives, in LE speak, there are many buzz words used to avoid any future lawsuit.

"Appears to be" = It is, but not committing to this.
"Suggests" = means it is but I am not accusing.
"Consitsant with" = also means I am certain but leaving myself an out should the perp get a really smart lawyer.
All of these phrases are used to CYA and we all know what that means.

As to this UID or any, waiting for confirmation is always good, if you want to save time backtracking and looking for another gender.

I drive by this area multiple times during the week. It is NOT an isolated area. There is a hospital, golf course, baseball field and Oakton Community College is all right there. And a cemetery is down the road.

It would be unusual if they were not related imo. Especially in this area. I knew it was close to a straight shot between the two locations which is why I immediately thought they were related. I agree with you about the area, though I am not super familiar with it......Odd that I thought, why there and why not Busse Woods? Busse Woods seems more isolated.......

I hope LE is able to id this person or persons soon.....

Agreed.

Apparently it's about a 5 mile, almost straight shot down the road. A poster on that link I provided said they probably tossed it over the bridge on their way to Arlington Heights. I agree - however it is strange that they think it is female though it apparently is severely decomposed - how would they be able to tell? Maybe the extra rib that some females have? That's about the only difference that I know about between men and women from the waist up in terms of bone structure. I guess we will find out soon enough.

I don't think the initial responders found skeletal remains, and as icky as this thought is it occured to me perhaps bloating from decomposition made it appear to the first responders as if the person was female.

I'm not familiar enough with the area to know of the bridge.... I'm further south in the DuPage area.... I just hope LE can get this one solved and I am glad they found both parts of the person, as I think it will be confirmed they are one in the same. So often we see these Does with partial remains and the rest are never found.....

Ick - you may be right.

The bridge isn't anything extraordinary or large, many people may not even realize they are driving over a bridge when on it.

DNA results will not be available until at least mid-June. Why would it take so long, other than being pushed aside (originally they said about a week)? This is kind of a big deal, can't think of what would be put before this in the area, I haven't heard of any other homicides but I could be wrong.

Could be because they have to rely on the state lab. 6 weeks is about usual, but could easily be up to 6 months....... DNA labs are backed up terribly. :(

Finally, an update. Sort of. Still a mystery.

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=392836

"In April, Arlington Heights police released a sketch of tattoos on the lower part of the body.

A woman from Indiana called police to suggest the body could be her son's, Galinski said, but investigators located a recent girlfriend who said the tattoos did not match." Well yeah, if she is involved in it she would say that...
