WI WI/IL - Richard Otto Macek serial killer

I'd like to know more about Maceks HS years....... the trouble he got into, what did his school peers think of him? Was he a loner? Did he 'go for' much younger girls?

It would be really interested if any of his old school peers found us, joined WS and shared any memories of him.

Very long but semi interesting article from 2004 after Dr. Helen Morrison released her book about serial killers. She has her facts about Tomaselli being involved in investigating the Sally Kandel murder mixed up... Sally was murdered in Carol Stream, IL (DuPage County) and Tomaselli worked with LE in Wisconsin. Tomaselli tied Macek to the WI murders, DuPage county chose to stand firm on their belief the right man was convicted for Sally's murder.

He ended up spending 20 years behind bars for a murder he didn't commit, sadly even though DuPage had info on Macek within a year or two of the wrong man being convicted for Sally Kandels murder......... The many wrongfully convicted had his conviction was overturned in the 90's, 94 IIRC, after it was proven the info DuPage wanted to fight and ignore finally proved the real killer was Macek.

rpipergirl,
Is there anyway to enlarge just that article about Macek?

He lived in Elmwood Park, dropped out of HS around his Jr year. No highschool yearbook pictures in yearbooks. Moved to Niles after his father died. I am gathering after he got out of prison in 1973 is when he might have moved to McHenry County with is mom or somewhere shortly after that. He lived in Union, IL with is wife and her kids. Being he was already incarcerated within a week or two of Sally Kandel's murder that could be why he was never looked at.

In my opinion---Macek's MO--OVERKILL! to put it mildly.
It is like he killed his victim when he was full of rage. He would stalk his victims but it doesn't seem like for a long period of time. Or something about the victim woud invoke the hidden rage and he would just kill in broad daylight. He would use a knife and stab his victim multiple times almost as he could not stop, he would bite some of his victims, cut slits around eyes, blungeon with object carried or found at scene. He was even known to strangle victims with articles of clothing. So how appropriate he died by hanging himself.

BBM, we have to use the link per WS TOS. You should have a way to increase the size via the + or - sign available with the link, hth.

wish we had a better picture of Macek.

what years was he incarcerated for the 68 rape in Elmwood park? Do you know? What was he incarcerated for in late 72 just weeks after Sally's murder?

We really need a timeline of his arrests and time in jail or prison... if we can find the info.

Not as far as I know in Google news archives. Sorry,Luckymanuh. Boy you have really studdied him. I am so glad you are here. Was he ever charged with killing his wiges baby you mentioned in the other thread? How many murders do you think he commited?

Arrested for assault (no rape) 12-21-1967, sentenced- 9-26-1968, Incarcerated 10-6-1968, Paroled 9-27-1971, paroled ended 3-25-1972. Then a string of unsolved murders started about 3 months later.
I feel around 21-24 assault victims or murder victims. I am sure there are more that I have not be able to connect the dots to yet. If I am even correct, but my guts tells me on at least 7/8 of them I am.

He was never charged with killing his wife's baby.

bumping as we are discussing ROM in Debbie Fijans thread again......

Thanks for bumping this thread. I wonder if posts we have made recently on Debbie's thread should be copied here? I don't have much to add, but I'm subscribing to the thread.

A couple weekends ago I was up in Door County, WI and on the way back I found the cemetary this serial killer is buried in. I took pix of the headstone and had a few choice words for him. I will post the pix as soon as I can.

I found this link and thought could any of these be Macek murders?

Long bone to chew on...
Old article, forum doesn't look to be active.

I would love to see some of the cold case sleuths see how many of these cases are solved or not? If not let's sleuth and if solved can we tie these to any unsolved?

I go back to the fact that Macek was a truck driver. Given the time to do so, it might be interesting to research other murders in the neighboring states with a similar MO.

The length of that list is disturbing, to say the least.

First one is Richard Macek in 7th grade. Sent to me by Sparky134. Thank you!

The only thing wrong with the last one is he was born in 1947. They may have done that to throw grave seekers off.

That photo looks like the composite sketch on a cold case.
I don't remember which one.
But anyone looking at that 70s photo will remember the sketch
i am thinking of.

That looks pretty spot on, even down to the nose and chin lines. If we were doing side by sides comparing a missing person to a UID I'd say submit.

Forgive me but I am not as up to date on the cold cases as many of you are. Mr. TT can you tell me/us which case that sketch was from?

This many years later, with DNA and forensics being so scientifically advanced I'm really surprised someone out there working cold cases - meaning LE - isn't looking at closing out some cold cases by really digging into Macek.

We've seen several cold cases closed, even when the perp is already deceased. Even if the case can not go to trial because the perp is deceased it still brings some final closure to the family who finally have the answers and know who was ultimately responsible. If that isn't happening/in the works somewhere, we can add that to the long list of things seriously wrong with the state of IL.

The other thing i notice.
Was both the composite sketch
and the 70s photo have what appear to be
freckles on the forehead.

I got the composite from the Betsy Aardsma case.
Not sure if it was from that case, or someone was just doing a comparison to that case.
