Police reopen missing persons case from 1964

Police in Salt Lake City reopened a 45-year-old missing persons case. They also launched a new website dedicated to missing persons.

That new website, launched Tuesday, profiles missing persons in the Salt Lake area. One of those cases is that of Reed Jeppson.

Reed was 15 years old when he disappeared near his Salt Lake City home. On Oct. 11, 1964, he went outside to walk his two German shorthaired pointer dogs. Jeppson and the two dogs were never seen again.

The family says they hope the new missing persons website and new DNA database will help.

Police are taking DNA samples from all of Reed's siblings. The samples will be entered into two different databases for missing persons.

Salt Lake City police hope someone will remember something from Reed's case to give them a break.

In the article in post #1 by I4G there was a comment mentioning that remains of a white male was found on 02 March 2010.

Also snipped from the article I4G posted in OP:

...Reed lived near Emigration Canyon, near 1400 South and 3000 East...

I found the article referencing that young man's remains:

The remains were of a white male aged 17-22. They were found just north of Millcreek Canyon. They said the remains were probably there at least 10 years.

Kat I saw that too. I think it needs further investigating. Next steps?

I was contacted back and told they were forwarding my info suggesting these remains be checked for a match against Reed to Reed's POC NCMEC. I figured the POC for the UID has fewer tips and may be less busy, but since I spent more of the email focusing on Reed it makes sense. Will update when I hear more.

Update to the Reed Jeppson case:
Salt Lake City policy are digging in a gully, about a half block from the Jeppson home, due to recent information they've obtained.

Those remains were recently identified as a missing man from Illinois - almost accidentally through DNA. The family thought the missing man may have been a Gacy victim, but it turned out that he'd fallen off a mountain east of Salt Lake City..

Dozens Of Missing Persons Cases In Utah Remain Unsolved

[snip]

In Utah, 75 people have vanished into thin air since the 1960's.

[snip]

The oldest mystery dates back to 1964 when Reed Taylor Jeppson, a high school football star, went to walk his dogs near St. Mary'€™s Church on the East Bench.

He was 15-years-old and hasn't been seen since.

I wonder what the behavior of the dogs were like when they came back. I know that some dogs would never leave their owner if they were injured or distress. I wondered if the dogs were in any kind of distress when they came back.
